Lady Wolverines outpace McCall-Donnelly 24-12 in season finale

 Weiser’s Lady Wolverine varsity softball team wrapped up regular season play with a 24-12 win over McCall-Donnelly’s Vandals in Weiser on Monday, May 1, landing solidly in a second seed position going into District Championships.
 The long, frustrating winter had its way with the whole valley this spring, and even more so in Idaho’s mountains. With ball fields still covered in snow in McCall, this was the Vandals second trip to Weiser this year, putting them on the scoreboard as the “home” team.

 Weiser Wolverines got a chance to play McCall this past week on Monday.  
 The JV and varsity were supposed to travel to McCall, however with snow covered fields still the norm in McCall, they made the trip down for the second time this season.

 If you were near Roy Dickerson Memorial Field on Wednesday, May 3, you were treated to an unusual sight.
 A 58,000-pound Idaho Power bucket truck utilized its 100-foot extending boom to change out seven 1000-watt light bulbs at the sports complex.

 The Editor’s note: The following is the second of a two-part series on part-time local resident Ken Walston who has written five historical books on Weiser.
 
 Before the turn of the century, there were at least seven bars/saloons in Weiser, including a brewery. Their owners were referred to as the “Satanic Seven” in an early newspaper article.

Don’t let low water pressure worry you; city to flush hydrants May 17

The city of Weiser water department is notifying residents that crews will be flushing fire hydrants on Wednesday, May 17, 2023.
 The annual hydrant-flushing program is an important component in maintaining the city’s water system.
 It flushes sediments from mainline pipes, which enhances water quality, verifies the proper operation of fire hydrants and valves for fire protection, helps find weaknesses in the water system, checks for closed valves and weak flows in the water mains, and verifies ample flow for fire fighting, officials said.

City’s Jason George worked hard for journeyman lineman certification

 He started out as a ground crewman.
 Now, after years of dedication to his desired goal, Jason George is a journeyman lineman for the City of Weiser’s Electrical Department.  
 He is one of only two city employees certified for “hot-line” work, which means he can now handle high-stakes equipment like electrical transmission lines and transformers.

Property Taxes 101

Dear Editor:
 The last couple of years there has been a lot of citizens concerned about the rising cost of taxes. The budgeting process is starting in the county, city and districts. 
 The Idaho Republican Platform, Sec. 2 A. states: “We support lower federal, state and local taxes. High taxes are a burden on businesses, families, and individuals.”
 We need to understand who taxes us, and how they tax us.   
 The county is the one I would like to focus on.

Sand. Amazing piles of sand. The tallest (470’) sand dune in North America. This is what you will find about 20 miles south of Mountain Home at Bruneau Sand Dunes State Park where three large sand dunes sit in a basin around a couple of small lakes. 

Weiser Classic Candy Scholarship Breakfast May 20

 The first annual Weiser Classic Candy Scholarship Breakfast is scheduled for May 20 from 7-10 a.m. in front of the WCC store at 449 State St. in downtown Weiser. There is no cost, but participants are asked to make a donation of their choice. Funds will benefit the Weiser Classic Candy Entrepreneurial Scholarship.
