Weiser Elk’s Lodge potato bar fundraiser

 The Weiser Elk’s Lodge will have a potato bar night on Friday, July 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for $10. The fundraiser is open to all and money raised will help fill community needs.

Area law enforcement agencies hold job fair in Weiser

National Night Out, featuring law enforcement and first responders, to be held Aug. 1
For the first time, area law enforcement agencies teamed up to hold a job recruiting fair in an effort to fill open positions.
 The event took place Saturday, July 15 at the Vendome from 12-6 p.m.

Large crowd shows for presentation on former Weiser labor camp

It couldn’t have gone better for organizers of the Weiser Labor Camp presentation held Saturday, July 22.
 Held at the Weiser Train Depot, the presentation aimed to give an historical perspective on the camp, which existed from 1943 to 2003. The camp, which was government funded, switched locations early on, but was permanently moved to the current site of an onion packing facility, located at 734 W. Idaho St., in 1959.
 The site was purchased and transformed into Haun Packing until it was sold about a year ago to another packing company.

It’s time to shop for back to school supplies

The school bells will ring for Weiser School District students on Monday, Aug. 21. Students at Pioneer Elementary School will be back in session on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
 Students in grades kindergarten to third grade who are new to the Weiser School District may register at Pioneer School beginning Aug. 3 during the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. 
 At the time of registration, a certified birth certificate (not a copy) and an immunization record will be required. 
 Weiser High School supplies will be determined on the first day of class.

23rd annual Court Street Cruise set for Saturday, Aug. 5

The 23rd annual Court Street Cruise, hosted by the Court Street Cruisers, is set to take place Saturday, Aug. 5 at City Park in Weiser. 
 Featuring a wide array of classic rolling steel, the event is free to the public and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
 Cost is $10 for those wishing to enter a car in the show, which is open to all makes and models, some of them dating back to the 1920s. Although most entries qualify as classics, it’s not a requirement, so don’t be shy about showing off your Lamborghini.

Weiser Recreation Department moves to Vendome

The Weiser Recreation Department has moved its office.
 Formerly located within Weiser City Hall on West Idaho Street, the office is now located at the Vendome Events Center, located around the block at 309 State St., south of the Metropole Coffee Shop. 
 The space was previously occupied by the Weiser Chamber of Commerce. 
 Through a previous agreement, the chamber was responsible for showcasing the Vendome and making reservations for its use.

‘Christmas in July’ marks Festival of Trees planning efforts

Planning for the annual Festival of Trees fundraiser always begins as soon as organizers can catch their breath from the latest event.
 The big push, however, begins with Christmas in July, a time when Weiser Memorial Hospital Foundation starts bringing the grand picture into clearer focus, which, in part, involves recruiting the 350 plus volunteers that are needed to make it all a success.
 “We are kicking off July 31,” said WMHF Executive Director and Festival of Trees Chair Kimberly Burgess who took over managing the fundraiser last year.

Weiser receives awards at Preservation Idaho event

Volunteers Steve and Cheri Clausen and Pastor Gerald Funke of St. Agnes Catholic Church were presented awards during the 46th annual Orchids and Onions Preservation Awards ceremony held Saturday, July 22 in Boise.
 Hosted by Preservation Idaho of the Idaho Historic Preservation Council, the event is designed to celebrate individuals and organizations that have made a positive contribution to historic preservation, as well as to bring awareness to those projects that have shown insensitivity to the state’s cultural history.

21st Century 4-H Club readies for county fair

For 4-H and FFA youth participants, it’s long been understood that the Washington County Fair and Rodeo in Cambridge is the best week of the year – every year – and the memories stored up from those experiences last a lifetime. 
 The six days in what can be the hottest part of the summer in southwest Idaho is the payoff for as many as 10 months of working with livestock and small animal projects or making creative exhibits that are found in the air-conditioned exhibit hall during fair week.
