High temperatures mean wildfire season is heading our way

Summer is here and the weather is warming up. High temperatures and drier air are here. With the wet spring we have had in our area, we are growing a lot of grass. This is good if you are grazing livestock or just enjoying the green on area hillsides. The downside is that we may face a larger than average fuel load when the grass dries out later this summer. 

Dog owners need to take control of their animals

Dear Editor,
 Since our family moved here six years ago, we have been subject to the whims of other people’s dogs on our property and in our neighborhood. 
 We woke up on Independence Day morning to find more than half of our flock of chickens dead in their pen, killed by a loose dog who had trampled the fence, done his mischief, and then left a big pile of “evidence” telling us exactly who was to blame.

 We The People (WTP) occasionally sing our National Anthem. But do we ever take the time to understand the verse that Francis Scott Key wrote in that precious poem, the Defense of Fort M’Henry in 1814? In the first verse he posed two questions, “O say, can you see,” and “O say, Does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave.”

City working on grants to improve livability for Weiser

Have you ever started something, then wished you hadn’t, then ended up being glad you did? Well, that is the situation Cathy and I found ourselves in last Thursday. Our little roadster required some special servicing in Boise, so Cathy and I decided to make a day of it. 
 In looking for something to do, Cathy found a hiking trail on Mores Mountain up by Bogus Basin that she wanted to try. It was only a three-mile loop and promised to have vistas at different points looking out over Treasure Valley, Horseshoe Bend, and the Sawtooths. 

Court Street Cruise

 Please join us on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023 for the Court Street Cruise at the Weiser City Park from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. This Show and Shine features many unique cars from around the Treasure Valley. The Knights of Columbus are offering breakfast and lunch menus, live music by The River Brothers Band and a beer garden. There will be a “Drag the Gut” where the registered classics parade through town at the end of the cruise. WMH Foundation to host suicide prevention speaker Aug. 14

In 2019, the suicide rate in Idaho was 58 percent higher than the national average, with most rural communities struggling for access to behavioral health care.But access is becoming less of a challenge thanks to Weiser Memorial Hospital Foundation, which has been taking big steps to turn that around locally.
 An important component of that effort takes place on Monday, Aug. 14, the foundation hosting two community events focusing on suicide prevention.

Three bucks gets you a brick and a piece of Legends

For the scant price of just three dollars, you can own a tangible piece of a business while supporting local high school athletics.
 Technically, Legends on Main Pub and Grill isn’t giving away true ownership, rather a chance to decorate a brick which will never be covered or washed away. It’s a new program launched by owner Rich Chalmers-Marks who was looking for a way to give back to the community and add a little life to the eatery, located at 114 E. Main St. in Weiser.

BLM rule could affect businesses, recreationists

A sweeping new rule proposed by the Bureau of Land Management has ranchers, water users, and recreationists on high alert.
 If adopted, it would give the BLM the authority to close off any of the 245 million acres it manages – over 12 million in Idaho – if deemed “Areas of Critical Environmental Concern,” or ACECs.
