The Weiser High School Wolverines all but shut out Kellogg on Friday at the Wildcats’ Teeter Field and picked up their second win on the road in two weeks.
The game was not even close as Weiser (2-0) held a 28-0 lead at halftime. The Wolverines put up one more touchdown in the third quarter on their way to the 35-7 rout of the Wildcats.
“We executed everything,” Weiser coach Tom Harrison said. “The kids made catches. The kids were blocking right. We were firing on all cylinders.”
Weiser made the long trip to Kellogg to play the second nonconference game of the season. The Wolverines won their season opener against the Buhl Indians at Buhl on Sept. 5.
Against the Wildcats, Weiser scored first when quarterback Brett Spencer punched the ball in from one yard out with 5:34 left in the first quarter. Sure-footed kicker Angel Magana made the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
A crucial turnover by the Wildcats gave the Wolverines the ball right back. Power runner Layten Tolman picked his way into the endzone for a 14-yard touchdown run. Tolman had a big game with two rushing touchdowns on the night. Weiser was up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Spencer went to the passing game for Weiser’s third touchdown of the first half. The quarterback, who had 110 yards passing on the night, hit Kooper von Brethorst for an 8-yard touchdown reception with 8:42 left to play in the first half.
With 2:53 left in the first half, Spencer found Matt Morris for a 7-yard touchdown pass. The Wolverines went into the locker room at halftime up 28-0 over the Wildcats.
Harrison said the locker room was upbeat at halftime and players were excited. He went over the game plan for the second half.
The Wolverines were not done on offense. With 9:48 left in the third quarter, Tolman ran the ball 27 yards for Weiser’s fifth and final touchdown of the game.
With the game well in hand, coaches put some kids in the game who haven’t seen much playing time so far this season.
Kellogg prevented the shutout by scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Brandon Miller threw a 30-yard touchdown pass. It was a tough night for the Wildcats’ playcaller. He went 3-for-11 on passing for only 43 yards. The final score was 35-7 with Weiser getting the win.
Weiser collected 278 yards of total offense, with 110 yards passing and 168 yards on the ground. Spencer threw for two touchdowns and completed 10 out of 15 passes. He also ran for 33 yards and one touchdown.
Tolman was the leading rusher for Weiser with 55 yards in the game and two touchdowns. Willy Shirts picked up 44 yards on the ground. Caleb Harris was the leading receiver with 33 yards, followed by Tim Reed with three catches and 30 yards and Kooper von Brethorst with 26 yards and one TD. Matt Morris pulled in one pass for seven yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Jack Burke had an interception for Weiser and ran the ball back 22 yards to set up an early Weiser score.
Weiser starts a four-game home stand against Gooding on Friday (Sept. 13) night at Memorial Park.
