The Weiser High School varsity girls cross country team qualified for the state championships, while the boys barely missed the cut at the SRV 3A District meet held on Oct. 22.
Eight WHS girls will travel to the 3A state championships in Pocatello on Nov. 2. The team includes Ellie Walker, Kiearra Hoobery, Libbie Rynearson, Emily Abramson, Stephanie Bodett, Ellie Eames, Ashlyn Walker and Taylor Wiles (alternate).
In team scores, the Weiser varsity girls placed second at the SRV District meet at McCain Middle School in Payette. The Fruitland girls placed first. Parma placed third and Homedale placed fourth.
The course at the district event in Payette was dry and dusty last year, but rain the night before provided runners with better conditions this year.
Weiser senior Ellie Walker had a top five finish out of a field of 29 runners with a time of 23:33.51. Other Weiser runners and their times included Kiearra Hoobery (23:42.90), Libbie Rynearson (23:59.40), Emily Abramson (24:52.08), Stephanie Bodett (24:56.63), Ellie Eames (26:01.26), Ashlyn Walker (26:25.75).
Fruitland’s Emma Hillam won the varsity girls race with a fast time of 20:15.95. Hillam finished nearly two minutes ahead of the next runner. Parma senior Megan Hancock placed second with a time of 22:00.42 and Fruitland senior Addison Concidine took third with a time of 22:59.89.
The Weiser boys were close to qualifying for state but didn’t make the cut in the large field of runners. The boys placed fourth in team scores. Parma placed first and Fruitland was runner-up. The Homedale boys took third place.
Senior Nate Lattin paced the Weiser runners, finishing with a time of 19:17.87. Although it was not his fastest time this season, he finished in the top 15 out of a field of 33 runners from SRV Conference schools at the district competition.
Other Weiser boys and their times included Colton Foster (19:57.18), Tyler Walker (19:57.97), Michael Despain (20:12.79), Ben Hathhorn (20:39.63), Dylan Turrentine (21:27.33), Colyer Chandler (22:07.62).
Parma senior Stetson Beus won the boys varsity race with a time of 17:22.10. Fruitland runners Atticus Andersen and Caleb Christensen placed second and third with times of 17:50.90 and 17:59.07, respectively.
Weiser coach Scott Hale said the runners have worked hard all season and the 3A state championhips will showcase their talent.
“I like to look at the state championships as a celebration of excellence. And that’s exactly how I hope these athletes consider themselves, as excellent athletes. They put in months of work and they are the ones that accomplished this task,” Hale said.
Last year’s state championships were held at Lewiston Orchards. The event moved to the Portneuf Wellness Center in Pocatello this year.
