Weiser gets by Ontario for second time this season

Weiser vs. Ontario
Dec. 11
The Lady Wolverines hosted the Ontario Tigers recently, and hoped for a repeat of the shellacking that they dished out to the Tigers during their first game, and although it wasn’t nearly as big a blowout, the Wolverines still managed to take the win 59-41.
The Tigers were hot in the first quarter, shooting 71 percent for 11 points from the field, but the Wolverine defense limited the amount of opportunities that they permitted the Tigers to have.
The Wolverines only shot 50 percent during the quarter, but had many more opportunities that they were able to capitalize upon; scoring 18-points from the field, 6 of which were by Marissa Moyle from behind the 3-point arc, and three points from the free throw line.
Leading 21-11 to begin the second period, it appeared that someone had placed a cover over the Wolverine basket. The Weiser ladies shot a dismal 3-for-14 for seven points, but still managed to outscore the Tigers’ 11 points with five free throws from Abbey Shirts and Moyle.
The Wolverines had a comfortable 33-22 lead to begin the second half and added to their lead in grand fashion with 14 points, all while holding the Tigers to a mere two points (1 of 12).
With only one quarter left in regulation, the Tigers had a 47-24 deficit to overcome, and allowed the Tigers a bit of an opportunity by letting up defensively and through fouls. The Tigers scored their only free throws of the game (five) in the fourth quarter, and although they only shot 5-for-18 from the field, they still managed to outscore the Lady Wolverines 12-8. Fortunately, the Wolverines had a comfortable lead and still managed to take the game 59-41.
Marissa Moyle led the Wolverines with 13 points and eight rebounds, followed by Maddy Erickson and Andrea Bouvia with 12 points and one rebound apiece. Abbey Shirts added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Sara Lundberg tallied eight points. Macy Moore also had three points.
Weiser vs. Nyssa
Dec. 14
The Lady Wolverines traveled to the home of the Nyssa Bulldogs for their second match-up against an Oregon team for the week, but unlike their win over the Ontario Tigers, the Wolverines came up a bit short against the Bulldogs 43-36.
The Wolverines started out strong in the first quarter with Marissa Moyle scoring baskets from both the paint, behind the arc and from the line for six points. Abbey Shirts also had a field goal, while Maddy Erickson and Macy Moore both combined for three points from behind the line.
The Wolverines led the Bulldogs 11-8 after one period. However, the Bulldogs returned the favor before the half, scoring eight points to the Wolverines’ four points from Erickson and took a one point, 16-15 lead over the Wolverines.
Both teams picked up the defensive pace in the second half, but despite holding the Bulldogs to only 8 shots in the third period, the Bulldogs did the same to the Wolverines and found more success, expanding their lead 27-22.
Moyle shot 100 percent from the field and from the line for six points during the fourth quarter and Abbey Shirts was equally as accurate from the line with four points and two from the field, but Wolverine fouls put the Bulldogs at the line too many times and the game came down to free throws.
The Wolverines allowed only four points from the field, but 12 points from the charity stripe, enabling the Bulldogs to take the game 43-36.
Maddy Erickson and Marissa Moyle each had 12 points and 2 and 7 rebounds, respectively, while Abbey Shirts added 8 points and 5 rebounds.  Madison Phillips had 3 points and 2 rebounds while Macy Moore had 1 point and 4 rebounds.
Weiser vs. Vale
Dec. 15
The Wolverines rounded out their busy week of basketball against Oregon teams with a home win against the visiting Vale Vikings 51-48.
The Wolverines came out strong in the first quarter, with Maddy Erickson scoring five points while Marissa Moyle and Abbey Shirts each had four of their own; taking an early 13-9 lead.
The Wolverines continued to dominate into the second quarter with Moyle scoring six points from 3-point land while Sara Lundberg found her mark also behind the arc. Shirts and Erickson each had a basket, but the Weiser defense was also impressive in the first half, holding the Vikings to only five points.
Leading 26-14 to begin the second half, the Wolverines must have rested a bit too long during halftime because their shooting was 3-for-14 for only six points from the field and three from the line, while the Vikings managed to chip away at the scoring deficit with 14 points.
The Wolverines continued to struggle with shot selection into the final period, shooting only 17 percent while the Vikings found the hot hand, scoring 14 points.
However, once again the game came down to fouls and free throws.  The Vikings shot an impressive 6 for 7 (86 percent) from the line in the final period, but the Wolverines stepped to the line 18 times.  Although their percentage was only 61 percent, they still added 11 points via freebies to take the game 51-48.
Maddy Erickson and Marissa Moyle tied again in the points with 13 each and 5 and 7 rebounds, respectively, followed by Abbey Shirts with 9 points and 10 rebounds.  Sara Lundberg added 8-points and 7 rebounds to her stats, and Andrea Bouvia tallied 5-points and 1 rebound.  Macy Moore had 2 points and Sheyanne Hilmer added 1-point.
