Last Wednesday, the Weiser Wolverine wrestlers hosted a tri-meet with Parma and Vallivue. It was a good night to see what Parma had for competition in the SRV conference as well as the challenge of a 4A school wrestling Vallivue.
Weiser wrestled Parma first and almost wrestled a perfect dual beating them 76-0. Weiser capitalized on four forfeits by Parma and didn’t lose any points on two double forfeits in a couple of weight classes. The rest of the dual was pretty fun to watch with every one of the matches ending in a fall in favor of the Wolverines and one match that was won by a major decision.
The fastest fall was recorded by Weston Black at 18 seconds into the match at 132 pounds.
Then it was time to face Vallivue. One double forfeit gave neither team any points, but Weiser didn’t fill the 132 pound weight class, pushing Weston Black to 126 pounds and giving six points to Vallivue.
Weiser won the dual 48-28 with Weiser capitalizing on their ability to get falls and each of the matches that they won was by fall.
Black again recorded the fastest one at 57 seconds into the match.
This was the first home match for the Wolverines and Head Coach Chad Gibson was grateful to get this first one in the record books.
“We competed well and won our duals, but our wrestlers wrestled at their competitor’s level and not ours,” he stated. “I am happy that we were able to have two duals on Wednesday so that we could make proper adjustments headed into the Clearwater Classic on the weekend,” he added.

Weiser then traveled to Lewiston for the Clearwater Classic. This tournament hosted 18 teams from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Weiser looked good, winning the entire tournament to bring home the first place finish with 254 team points.
Coach Gibson said it was fun to watch the wrestlers pick up where they left off at Spring Creek.
“We were grinding through matches no matter who the competitors were or the score on the scoreboard. Winning the tournament is awesome, but more importantly it gives us validation that we are headed in the right direction and provides us learning opportunities,” Gibson stated. Weiser not only won the tournament, but in the process had 10 wrestlers place in the top four of their weight classes.
Two seniors, Trenton Hawker (220) and Maddox Stevens (170) both continued their winning streaks bringing home first place finishes and contributing to the team points. Hawker won each match by a fall or a major decision to capitalize on points and recorded one of his falls in just 26 seconds. Stevens was a fall king winning each and every match by fall as Weiser fans are used to seeing.
Junior, Kaleb Grove (195) continued his win streak with some hard work winning three of his four matches by fall; one of them in 58 seconds and brought home a first place finish as well. Kash Cobb (152), a sophomore, continued the fall streak winning all four of his matches by fall and capturing the first place finish in his weight class.
Second place finishes for the Wolverines were Charlie Nevarez at 113 pounds and Stockton Young at 145 pounds. Fourth place finishers were Luke Sarich at 138 pounds, Willie Sudderth at 160 pounds, Lucas Goff at 182 pounds, and Tristan McMahill at 285 pounds.
The Lady Wolverine wrestlers also competed at the tournament and Aliyah Alhilla brought home a first place finish to help her team. Mackenzie Fletcher, Audrey DeLeon, and Payzlee Wilkins each brought home a third place finish as well.
Weiser hosts Fruitland this week at their home dual on Wednesday, Jan. 25 and then goes to New Plymouth on Saturday for the RD Brown Tournament.
The following weekend of Feb. 3 and 4, the Wolverines will be hosting the Weiser Invitational at the Weiser High School Gym. Come support your Wolverine wrestlers.
