Following a Weiser High School girls junior varsity soccer game that ended in a 2-2 tie with Homedale, Wolverine fans celebrated this season’s 12th-grade players and the team’s manager/stats keeper in a special Senior Night ceremony.
The list of seniors includes: Teagan Hawker and Nora Chandler, both goalkeepers; Kiley Whiting, defender; Daena Padilla, midfield; Alia Oarbeascoa, defense/midfield; Delsie Breshears, midfield; Lacey Christopherson, midfield/forward; and Eli Santoya, manager/stats keeper.
The Lady Wolverines played an outstanding first half, holding the Trojans to a single goal in the first 40 minutes. Homedale’s score was made on a kick that sent the ball high into the right corner goal’s metal frame just out of Hawker’s reach.
The Wolverines lost some momentum in the second half, and Homedale added four more goals, ending the game in a 5-0 loss for the Wolverines.
“It was a fun night for them,” coach Trine Loenberg said. “They were very happy after the first half. They were really playing as a team and helping each other. And they were ready for the second half, but they do get tired. That’s what happens, but I have to say, they did great and they fought to the end. I think they are a little disappointed because they felt so good after the first half.”
In Payette on Thursday, the Wolverines claimed their ninth win over the Pirates since 2020, this time by a score of 5-0.
The Wolverines netted two of five shots on goal in the first half, scored by Chloe Moses (30) and one by Sophie Shirts (9). The pair followed suit in the second half, scoring one goal each, plus Reilly McCalmont (13) netting another, 50 percent of the team’s six total shots on goal in the half. McCalmont also recorded an assist on a goal.
“Our girls did a great job, and played an overall great game,” Loenberg said. “Unfortunately, Alia (Oarbeascoa) was tripped, rolling her ankle. We are happy the girls won and we are looking forward to the next game, and the district tournament.”
Currently in the last week of regular season play, only the top six of seven SRV teams will compete in the upcoming district tournament, starting Saturday, Oct. 10, with the first game between the fourth and fifth seeds, and game two between the third and sixth-place seeds.
