The Weiser Lady Wolverines added another win to their SRV Conference record with their 57 to 37 victory over the Homedale Trojans on Tuesday, Jan. 16. This was not the first meeting of these two teams, as they played back on Jan. 4 where the Wolverines won 44 to 29.
The Trojans jumped out to an early but short-lived lead after they made a 3-pointer and a free throw, 2 minutes into the game Homedale was up 0 to 4.
Ellie Shirts soon scored a 3-pointer on the wing beyond the arc, bringing Weiser to within 1 point. Next trip to offense, Shirts passed the ball to Evie Dolton inside for 2, giving Weiser the 1-point lead. Weiser never fell behind again and continued increasing their lead.
Midway into the first, Kailee Lerew passed the ball to Shirts at the top for another 3-pointer. Then, with under 2 minutes to go, Jayden Higley inside the paint kicked the ball out to Kendall Rynearson in the corner for another 3 for Weiser.
The Wolverines were up by 6 points at the end of the first quarter, 12 to 6.
Weiser scored right away in the second quarter with a sideline inbounds play where Shirts had a great lob pass over the Homedale defense into the waiting arms of Hailey Eames for 2 points.
The Wolverines were able to pick up a couple of scores with steals in their full-court press. With 2 minutes remaining in the half, Trista Buescher stole the ball from Homedale near half-court and took it down for a lay-in. Twenty seconds later, Shirts found Dolton open at the elbow for a nice jump shot and 2 points.
The final score of the second quarter came from a skip pass from Rynearson that crossed from the corner over the key to Buescher who was just outside the paint a couple of steps from the offside block. Buescher grabbed the pass and went up for 2 and the 14-point lead going into the locker room.
At halftime, it was Weiser 28, Homedale 14.
In the third quarter, Homedale had possession of the ball, but Weiser was the first to score. Eames rebounded the ball and passed it to Rynearson at the top for a 3-pointer.
Weiser continued to add points and with 2:13 left, Shirts hit Lockett for a six-foot jump shot in a baseline out-of-bounds play. Homedale responded with their own score.
With 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Shirts passed the ball to Lockett on the wing who made a perfect 3-point shot, increasing Weiser’s lead to 25 points. The score was Weiser 49, Homedale 24.
In the fourth quarter, the Trojans fought hard but only managed to reduce the Wolverine’s lead to 20 points by the end of the game. The final score was Weiser 57, Homedale 37.
Shirts led the Wolverines scoring 15 points, while Eames added 9, and both Rynearson and Dolton each had 8. Buescher scored 6 points, Lockett had 5, Higley with 4, and Lerew had 2. Eames also had 10 rebounds and Dolton had 9. Shirts led Weiser with 7 assists.
