The softball team is loaded with talent. Aimee Wootton is in her third year as head coach but she’s not new to softball or even Weiser softball. A prolific pitcher, Wootton had very good success for our own WHS team.
She is helped out by another veteran of the short stop position, Lauren Oyervides. Oyervides has been involved for about 11 years including helping her father Andy Oyervides coach here at WHS. Rounding out the staff are Brandon Stromberg, Jose Aburto and John Wootton.
The freshman class is strong bringing ladies who have been playing club ball for awhile. This is the first year the coaches actually had to cut players as so many came to try out. There are a couple of players from Cambridge and one from TVCA.
The biggest problem is the soggy field but Monday’s practice went okay as the nicer weather and wind helped to solidify the mud. The ladies were hard at it fielding pop flies and grounders, rotating from station to station. There were some strong arms throwing.
Wootton says she has a good mix of returning and talented veterans and the youngsters. They have big shoes to fill. Returning for WHS is the starting pitcher and all the infield except the short stop position. Perhaps the biggest question mark will be in the batters box. Will this team be able to hit the ball as well as last year’s team? Time will tell.
Wootton also mentioned that Cole Valley will be really tough as their coach does this full-time with clubs. Homedale graduated a lot of seniors so they should be able to handle that team. She is really excited about this year’s team and thinks they should do really well in the SRV.
They open their season on March 14 away and then have a double header the next day in New Plymouth. It doesn’t take long to be in the thick of things.
Good luck ladies.
