After defeating Fruitland 2-1 in the first round of 4A District 3 tournament playoffs, Weiser’s varsity boys soccer team took round two to the SRV first-seed Parma Panthers on Tuesday, Oct. 15, taking another 2-1 win and securing a berth to the 4A state tournament in Post Falls this weekend.
All of the goals were scored in the first half, with Carlos Garcia (7) and Julio Hernandez (11) netting one apiece for the Wolverines. Hernandez gets the credit for the assist on Garcia’s goal, and Jai Cervantes (6) provided the assist to Hernandez. Parma’s Ian Alvarez scored a solo for the Panthers one goal in the game.
After finishing regular season in a 4-4 tie with the Panthers, the Wolverines win on Tuesday and winning the trip to the state tournament was that much sweeter.
Wrapping up the tournament in McCall on Thursday, the teams were playing for first and second place district titles.
The Wolverines held their own against the always tough Vandals through the first half. The Vandals managed to get two on the board, but within the last few minutes of the half, Hernandez made a quick shot off of a pass from Cervantes, getting it by McCall’s goalkeeper Michael Foster.
The second half went in the favor of the Vandals with them scoring another two goals. The Wolverines came close to another one themselves well into the second half when Foster missed a grab on a ball about waist high as he moved out to meet a pass aimed for Weiser’s Santi Perez (9). Perez turned and made at least two tries to get it across the line, but it was kicked back each time by one Vandal defender or another who had moved into the goal box.
One of just eight total teams from Idaho’s 4A classification playing in the state tournament, the Wolverines are scheduled to play in the third match at Real Life Fields in Post Falls on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 12:30 p.m., where they will meet the Wendell Trojans. McCall-Donnelly will face Sun Valley Community School in the following game at 2:30 p.m. The winners of the two games will face off on Friday, Oct. 25, at 2:30 p.m.
Let’s go, Wolverines!
