Weiser High School’s Wolverine golf team got out on Rolling Hills Golf Course for their 2025 opening practice by the middle of last week, prepping for an exciting new season.
Head Coach Tom Harrison said he’s anticipating a fun season, with a good number of returning players.
“I’m always excited about a new season, and I’m really excited about our girls team,” Harrison said. “They’re all back after finishing fourth at State last year, and they’re looking to improve on that. Lucy (Hickey) finished fourth in the State medalists last spring, too, and she’s got a good nucleus of girls around her who practice pretty hard.”
Last year’s boys team saw a big number of new golfers, and Harrison was pleased with their progress through the season.
“The boys improved a lot from start to finish,” he said. “They didn’t place, but each boy who participated last year got a lot better individually. They practice hard and are pretty good about doing that, and that’s a big key.”
At the outset the team numbers look to be running around eight to 10 on each of the teams.
“You just don’t know and it’s hard to say at this point in the season, because it can change,” Harrison said. “Sometimes you add some, and sometimes you lose some.”
Looking at the schedule, Harrison said the girls team is hosting an invitational tournament on Monday, March 17. The boys will head to Timberstone Golf Course to compete against Parma on Tuesday, March 18.
“Today’s the first day we’ve been out on the golf course, so we’re going to get with it a little bit today,” he said. “The weather looks like it’s going to cooperate with us, and we’re happy about getting started.
“Monte Hurd is helping me again this year, and I’m excited about him being out here with us,” he added.
A great deal of the funding for the WHS golf program is derived from an annual golf scramble.
“We’re looking at hosting that fundraiser on April 19,” Harrison said. “Last year we had a large number of people participate, so we’re looking forward to doing that scramble. It really helps us out.
