Weiser varsity baseball competed this past week in four games, two versus Payette and two versus New Plymouth. It was a rough week taking losses in each of the games, however the Wolverines did see some bright spots and some successes.
Weiser took on Payette first on Monday at Payette. Weiser collected five hits vs. Payette’s four but took the loss 8-0.
Weiser went three up and three down in the first inning while Payette put one on the board. In the bottom of the second inning, Payette tried to steal second base and one of those bright moments happened for the Wolverines when Telsyn Hawker, the catcher threw down to Jace Waggoner at short stop who tagged the runner out for the third out.
Weiser could be characterized as aggressive at the plate with some batters fouling off four to five pitches only to be struck out. This means timing is an issue and it is definitely one that the Wolverines can work on. The five hits for the Wolverines came from the bottom of the order with one each from Jace Waggoner, Lance Albertson, Kaden LaChapelle, Blake Barton, and Cole Ingle.
On the mound for the Wolverines to start was Weston Black who went four innings and recorded four hits with eight runs, five earned, three walks and two strikeouts. Kaghen Cluff came in for Weiser and went two innings recording no hits, no runs, no walks, and no strikeouts. The Wolverines also had three errors during the competition.
Payette
Wednesday was a rematch with Payette and the final score was 16-1 Payette. The game was 6-1 when the Pirates added 10 runs in the sixth inning to end the game.
Weiser collected three hits during the evening with Moyne Ingram, Jace Waggoner, and Telsyn Hawker getting hits for the Wolverines. Kaden LaChapelle collected an RBI in the sixth inning after hitting a sacrifice fly to score Waggoner after Waggoner had one of those bright moments when he hit a triple.
On the mound for the Wolverines was Moyne Ingram who went four innings recording six hits, six runs, four earned, three walks, and four strikeouts. In relief Weiser used Isai Herrera and Cole Ingle. Herrera recorded two hits, seven runs, six earned, four walks, and two strikeouts in his one inning. Ingle finished off the last inning with two hits, three runs, three earned, three walks, and one strikeout. The Wolverines also saw six errors in the field.
New Plymouth DH
On Friday they got in a doubleheader with New Plymouth. During the first game Weiser stayed in it until the end showing more poise at the plate with only three strikeouts and nine walks.
New Plymouth put runs on the board in the first inning but Weiser answered back to tie the game 3-3. Ingle got on with a nice base hit and Black hit a strong double to score him. With Black on second base, Waggoner walked and Black would score on an error by the pitcher while Waggoner advanced to third. LaChapelle had a great single to drive in Waggoner. A walk by Wyatt Black gave the Wolverines the lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the second inning.
Telsyn Hawker hit a sacrifice fly, which helped Weiser tie the game at five in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, Weiser took the lead 6-5 with Herrera’s fielder’s choice. In the seventh inning things turned gloomy for Weiser when New Plymouth scored four unanswered runs.
LaChapelle led things off on the mound for the Wolverines. He recorded four hits and five runs, two earned over his four innings. He also struck out four and walked three. Weston Black came in for relief and went three innings, surrendering four runs on four hits, striking out one and walking four.
Weston Black, Hawker, LaChapelle, Herrera, and Wyatt Black each drove in one run for Wolverines. Ingle collected two hits for Weiser in four at bats while Weston Black went three for three at the plate. Waggoner stole two bases of Weiser’s four.
One awesome statistic for the competition was the four double plays that Weiser recorded! Final score was New Plymouth 9 to Weiser’s 6.
New Plymouth game 2
Game two was just as back and forth as the first game with Weiser taking a tough loss 16-13.
Weiser hit the ball well with 11 hits and 12 RBIs. Every batter in the lineup got a hit and Hawker and Ingle led the team with two hits each and batting .500 during the contest. Ingle also had three RBIs to lead the Wolverines during his hitting spree. Errors still plagued the Wolverines with six on the books.
Lance Albertson got the start on the mound and went three and two-third innings recording two hits, five runs, five earned, six walks and two strikeouts. Kaghen Cluff came in on relief and lasted one and a third innings. His stats included one hit, five runs, one earned, three walks, and three strikeouts. Jace Waggoner came in for the final two innings. Waggoner had four hits, six runs, five earned, one walk and four strikeouts.
Weiser had three stolen bases, two by Weston Black and one by Moyne Ingram.
The Wolverines take a break for spring break and come back to face Nampa Christian on Friday this week for a doubleheader.
