WHS softball earn a win and a loss in opening week

Lady Wolverine Ellie Shirts stole home for Weiser’s first run in a game loss to Cole Valley on Wednesday, March 13. The Wolverines earned a 14-3 win over Baker City’s Bulldogs in the season opener the day before. This week’s warmer temperatures will make for more pleasant game watching conditions. Weiser High School’s Lady Wolverine softball team opened the 2024 spring season with a 14-3 win over visiting Baker City Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, March 12.
The Wolverines moved into a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, with Baker scoring two in the top of the third to take a short-lived 3-2 lead.
Weiser exploded in the bottom of the third, adding six runs on eight hits. Left fielder Jessie Cantrell scored two runs on a double to left field, and then crossed home for a run off of a single by third baseman Taylor Mordhorst.
While the Bulldogs came up dry in the rest of the game, Weiser added one run in the fifth when shortstop Danica Lockett hit a hard ground ball to short, scoring second baseman Jordan Stromberg.
Weiser scored another five runs off of four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. A ground out by first baseman Ellie Shirts, and singles by Stromberg and pitcher Aryssa Aburto added three, and a triple by catcher Bennet Torres sent two home, ending the game with a non-conference 14-3 win.
On the mound for Weiser, Aburto threw all six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out nine.
Stromberg, Aburto, and Cantrell each hit 3-4, and centerfielder Trista Buescher recorded 3-3. Torres led with three RBIs; Lockett recorded two; and Stromberg, Cantrell, and Mordhorst each had one apiece.
In earlier action, Weiser’s junior varsity team ended the outing with the JV Bulldogs in a 5-5 tie. Madi Janicek was in the circle for the Wolverines, throwing four innings, giving up five runs on three hits, and striking out seven.
Second baseman Fatima Travanco led in hits, going 2-3. Travanco, Jossy Jaeger-Funcannon, Madi Swearingen, and Kindra Sherry each recorded one RBI.

Chargers 21
The Lady Wolverines went toe-to-toe with the visiting Cole Valley Chargers through two full innings on Wednesday, March 13, before their bats went cold.
Cole Valley scored one run in the top half of the first, with Weiser running in four in the bottom. Shirts and Stromberg got on base by a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Shirts stole third and Stromberg was called out for offensive interference. Shirts scored on a steal of home to tie the score 1-1, and Lockett was walked, but then called out on offensive interference.
Aburto was walked, then went to third on a line drive single by Torres. Cantrell singled on a ground ball to first, sending Aburto home, and advancing courtesy runner Madi Janicek to third. Buescher was hit-by-pitch, loading the bases, followed by right-fielder Jessica Waite hitting a single and scoring Janicek, putting the Wolverines up 4-1.
The Chargers came back in the second inning, and with two outs on the board, scored five before they were stopped by a pop-out to Shirts at shortstop. Weiser answered with two runs in the bottom. Torres scored Stromberg on a single line drive to center, and Cantrell sent Aburto home on a hard ground ball to center.
It was all Cole Valley in the remaining three innings, with them adding seven, three, and five runs, and not giving the Wolverines a look at another scoring opportunity.
Weiser collected nine hits for six runs. Lockett started in the circle for the Wolverines, giving up seven hits for 12 runs, recording one strikeout. Aburto took over in the third giving up nine hits for nine runs, and recording two strikeouts. Janicek closed out the last inning, no hits, no runs, and one strikeout.
In JV action, the Wolverines dominated the young Chargers, with a 23-7 win. The Wolverines collected 27 hits for 23 runs. Janicek was on the rubber for two innings, giving up one hit and striking out six. Claramae Olsen appeared in relief for two innings, giving up seven hits for seven runs, and striking out five.
