Weiser track and field takes firsts

The Weiser High School track team competed in the State Track and Field Championships May 17 and 18 in Middleton. Weiser girls earned the top spot making them back to back 3A state champions. Coach Dave Shirts shared that it was a wonderful way to end a great season.
 “Both girls and boys competed extremely well, and there were many gutty performances. Our coaching staff is very proud of all of our athletes.  It was a great way to finish our season. This group of kids worked hard, showed great character, and took care of each other,” Shirts said. 
 In the boys’ competition, McCall-Donnelly took first place overall followed by Filer. The competition in the boy’s division was extremely close. Weiser ended in fifth place overall, only four points behind second place. 
 The Weiser team had two championship relay teams as well as several other athletes who placed in the top 10 in the state. 
 Jayden  Walker placed fourth in the 100m. Toren Walker placed seventh. Jayden Walker also placed third in the 200m. Toren Walker placed third in the 400. Zayn Crossley finished eighth in the 110m hurdles. 
 The 4x100m relay team: Jackson Laird, Jayden Walker, Brock Spencer, and Toren Walker not only took first place, but also broke the 3A state meet record with a time of 42.8.  
 The 4x200 team: Brock Spencer, Jackson Laird, Garrett Walker, and Xander Gray finished in fourth place. 
 The 4x400 team: Jayden Walker, Jackson Laird, Garrett Walker, and Toren Walker also earned the state championship with a time of 3:28.00. 
 Karsten Walker took sixth place in shot put with a throw of 46-2.25. Brock Spencer took seventh in discus with a throw of 138-10. Xander Gray took eighth in high jump with a hump of 5-08. Gray also took sixth in long jump with a jump of 20-06.75
 In the girl’s championship, every point counted, with Weiser taking first place by only half a point. Sugar Salem finished second,  followed by Kimberly in third.
 Madi Wilkins placed ninth in the 100m with a time of 13.09. Kailee Lerew placed second in the 200m with a time of 26.04. Lerew also earned her second straight championship in the 400m with a time of 58.49. Bethany Walker also placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 35-05.00.
 Claire Matthews placed second in the 800m with a time of 2:20.06. Matthews also placed third in the 1600 with a time of 5:27.13 and fifth in the 3200 with a time of 12:05.61. Kendall Rynearson placed seventh in the 3200 with a time of 12:32.2. 
 The 4x100 relay team: Madi Wilkins, Bethany Walker, Abi Wilkins and Kailee Lerew placed second with a time of 50.37. The SMR team: Madi Wilkins, Bethany Walker, Abi Wilkins and Kailee Lerew earned the championship with a time of 1:51.54.
