Weiser defeats Parma, hands Fruitland a win

Weiser’s catcher Brennett Marshall hit a single shot homerun to put the Wolverines on the scoreboard 1-0 in last week’s 2-0 win over Parma. Runs were hard to come by for both teams in the game, with no errors made on either side, and Marshall credited with the most defensive plays in the six inning go-round. Photo by Katie von Brethorst

Last week the Wolverine baseball squad hosted SRV competition at home playing Parma and then travelled to Fruitland to play the Grizzlies.
This is the time of year where movement starts to happen either because of pitching depth or the ebbs and flows of the hitting cycle. Weiser stayed consistent and celebrated the results.
Jack Shirts got the start on the mound for the Wolverines against the Parma Panthers and pitched a strong game going all seven innings. Shirts has been a consistent and developed pitcher this year for the Wolverines as a senior who manages adversity well.
Parma had seven hits against him, but Weiser’s defense was exceptional adding a couple of double plays by Weston Black and Moyne Ingram and another assist from Black to Isai Herrera at first base.
During the contest, Parma had two runners on the bases at second and third and Shirts worked diligently to pitch strikes and ground balls knowing his defense was behind him. Shirts ended up recording six strikeouts during the game.
Behind the plate was Brenett Marshall who not only did well there, but also hit a single shot homerun to put the Wolverines on the scoreboard 1-0 in the fifth inning.  Marshall’s hit was the only one recorded by the Wolverines.
Finn Dolton hit a groundout that scored Owen Funke to bring the score to 2-0 in the sixth inning and scored the only RBI for the Wolverines.  Funke got on base for the Wolverines and had the only base stolen during the contest. The score would remain through the top of the seventh, bringing Weiser their second win against Parma in SRV play.
The Wolverines also finished their youth baseball clinic this past Saturday. Many of the coaches and players from the high school program give their time during this event to try to pass on some of the skill level needed at the high school level of baseball. For a lot of these kids, it is creating a sense of team and camaraderie to go out with a group of boys and have fun on the field.  Clinics are an exciting time to see what the future holds for Weiser baseball and given the numbers and age groups of the clinic; the future looks bright.
Weiser has a busy week this week travelling to finish a rained-out game and a second conference game with Homedale on Monday.  Wednesday is a scheduled game at McCall so depending on field prep and weather that could become an additional home game for the baseball team. Then Thursday they host Nampa Christian at Walter Johnson Memorial Field. Finally on Saturday the Wolverines will travel to Meridian to take on Cole Valley.
 Go Wolverines!
