14-0 win over the Fruitland Grizzlies cements title
The Weiser varsity football team captured the Snake River Valley Conference Championship Friday with a 14-0 victory over the Grizzlies in Fruitland.
Though it has competed for, and won, state titles in between, it has been 19 years since the Wolverines brought home an SRV conference trophy, according to Weiser head coach Tom Harrison.
“It’s been a long time, and now we are going to play Payette and start getting ready for our second season, our playoff season,” he said in a phone interview Monday morning. “We are excited and the kids, obviously, are delighted, making history for our football program, our high school and our town.”
Friday’s home matchup against the Pirates (4-4, 1-3) is the last 2024 regular season game for the Wolverines who are 6-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play. They occupy the No. 1 spot thanks, in part, to a 30-6 victory over perennial conference powerhouse Homedale, which is 7-1 overall. Weiser is ranked third in the state’s 4A classification, according to WHS Athletic Director Bowe von Brethorst who added that Weiser will most likely enjoy a bye-week going into state competition.
Homedale is currently ranked ahead of Weiser on a state level, according to MaxPreps.com, which took over state rankings for the IHSAA (Idaho High School Activities Association) a couple years ago.
According to the IHSAA bracket, with one regular season game remaining, Weiser would skip the play-in round scheduled for Nov. 1-2 and would see action next in the quarterfinals Nov. 8-9 if the tournament were to start today.
Friday’s game:
Earlier last week, Harrison said the Grizzlies are a “very good football team,” which became evident by the 0-0 halftime score Friday in Fruitland.
It wasn’t until the third quarter, when senior running back Kash Cobb broke through the Grizzly defense for an 89-yard touchdown run, that momentum began to swing in Weiser’s direction. Cobb would later follow up with a 4-yard touchdown run. Senior kicker Diego Delgadillo’s extra-point attempts were good, making it 14-0 by the end of the third quarter.
“We controlled the ball and that’s our M.O., controlling the game running the ball,” Harrison said. “Kash had an outstanding night and broke the big run in the third quarter that put us up 7-0. That was a big one.”
Cobb finished off the evening with an amazing 221 yards rushing on 24 attempts, followed by senior quarterback Kolin Cook who ran the ball 8 times for 61 yards and junior running back Cole Ingle who had 58 yards on 11 carries.
No points were scored by either team in the fourth quarter, Harrison praising the Wolverine defense for its performance, handing Fruitland the proverbial “goose-egg.”
“We would have liked to have scored more points on offense; we had a couple of missed opportunities,” Harrison said. “But defensively, we played spectacular.”
Aside from running all over the Grizzlies on offense, Cobb recorded a total of 11 tackles on defense. Senior Luke Sarich had 8 total tackles followed by linebacker Kolin Cook who had 7. Junior defensive lineman Dylann Ashley recorded a quarterback sack and assisted on another for a total loss of 6 yards. Junior linebacker Cole Ingle had 5 total tackles followed by Delgadillo with 4 and Ty Cobb with 3. Sophomore Garrett Walker also added 3 tackles.
“Our kids and our staff have worked so hard, and things are starting to pay off,” Harrison said. “We hope it’s a sign of good things to come.”
