Scouts and church youth members will pick up nonperishable food items to fill up food pantries
On the second Saturday of November, a long-running BSA tradition is continuing. That tradition is a nationwide event known as Scouting for Food. Of course, this event is also being done by our very own Weiser Troop 350 who is sponsored by the Weiser Lions Club.
Scouting for Food started in 1985 and not long after that, Troop 350, the BSA troop in Weiser, followed suit in this tradition.
What is Scouting for Food? Scouting for Food is a national event that aims to help communities around America.
Scouts first go door-to-door on the Wednesday before the event, putting flyers on doors to remind people that the event is happening. Then, on the second Saturday in November, the Scouts pick up nonperishable foods and donate them to local food banks.
This year, the event falls on Nov. 9 and all food will be donated to WICAP. If you wish to donate some food before Nov. 9, you can go to WICAP and donate yourself. WICAP is located at 32 W. Main St., and they are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also do this on the day of the event if you wish. All food collected will stay in Weiser helping Washington County residents in need.
To donate your food, make sure to put nonperishable food items such as cans into cardboard boxes or grocery bags. Once everything is properly contained, you can leave it on your porch on the day of the pickup.
Also, if you can, make sure to put the Scouting for Food flyers on the bags or boxes of food so it’s easier for the Scouts to recognize them. This is not a requirement however so don’t feel bad if you forget about it.
Another important thing to keep in mind is to make sure the food is ready for pickup by 9 a.m. on the day of the event. Also, do not donate anything that is contained in glass to not have it break.
Also helping the BSA Troop 350 with this important task for the community is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints youth members.
The event also has a few sponsors that are worth mentioning. Those sponsors are Taco Bell, Beckman Foundation, JustServe.org, and Oppenheimer Companies Inc. They help fund the event on a nationwide level so without them, the event would be in a much worse place.
Last year over a ton of food was donated and the Scout troop is hoping to match that success or go even higher this year.
Let’s hope this will be a successful event for Troop 350 and that Scouting for Food can continue to help people for years to come.
