Operation Greenlight supports military veterans

Washington County recently passed a resolution designating the remainder of October through Veterans Day on Nov. 11 a period of observance in association with Operation Green Light.
The national initiative, at the direction of the National Association of Counties (NACO) in collaboration with the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers, invites counties to join Operation Green Light and show support for veterans by lighting buildings green. The Washington County courthouse last week, was emersed in green when tinted film was placed over lights that illuminate the building at night.
The county’s resolution reads, in part, that “the residents of Washington County have great respect, admiration, and the utmost gratitude for all of the men and women who have selflessly served our country and this community in the armed forces.”
Veterans continue to serve the communities across the nation in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, religious groups, civil service, and by functioning as county veteran service officers in 29 states to help fellow former service members access more than $52 billion in federal health, disability, and compensation benefits each year. It is estimated that about 200,000 service members transition to civilian communities every year, with an estimated 20 percent increase of service members transitioning to civilian life in the near future, a process that is not always easy.
Studies indicated that 44 to 72 percent of service members experience high levels of stress during that transition, according to the county’s proclamation, putting military service members at high risk for suicide within the first year after service.
“Washington County appreciates the sacrifices of our United States Military personnel and believes specific recognition should be granted,” the resolution states.
In addition, the resolution encourages Washington County citizens to “recognize the importance of honoring all those who made immeasurable sacrifices to preserve freedom by displaying a green light in a window of their place of business or residence.”
