Lady Wolverines taking a game at a time

Weiser’s Lady Wolverines soccer teams are showing an abundance of tenacity at the start of the 2024 season, taking in stride a first game 3-0 loss at Columbia High School last week, and then playing McCall-Donnelly at home on Thursday, Aug. 29, with a full team effort to narrow the score to 1-3 before the final whistle.
Head coach Trine Loenberg is delighted with her team’s attitude and the try they are bringing to every practice and game.
“We have seven new players who have never played soccer before, five of them are on varsity,” Loenberg said. “I can tell you I was happily surprised on Tuesday at Columbia. They have been listening and learning. There’s still a lot to go, because they’ve never played soccer before, but what they did out on that field was amazing to watch…in, like two weeks.
“It’s a big game, 11 versus 11 positions,” Loenberg added. “They want it, and they love it. What we’re trying to give them is self confidence, because it’s not winning or losing, we are here to learn, and that’s what the girls are here to do. Right now, these first couple of games are test games so we find out what we need to work on.
At Columbia on Tuesday, the Wolverines defense held the Wildcats scoreless in the first half of the non-league match, giving up three goals in the second.
Thursday’s conference game with McCall found Weiser down 3-0 at the end of the first. In an exciting save early in the game, Wolverine goalie Teagan Hawker moved out diving for a save that got around her, but one of her defenders interfered with the run long enough for Hawker to bounce back and grab the ball on the next attempt.
Hawker’s moving with confidence this season, and three kicks got past her later in the first half as she moved out to stop them. Staying back in the goal through the second half, McCall couldn’t get anything by her.
Weiser junior Isabella Froshiesar moved the ball up the field, sending the ball into the right corner midway through the second half, putting the Wolverines on the board, 1-3.
Assessing the game for themselves afterward, one teammate was overheard saying she felt like the team is playing as well as they had at the end of last season.
“You really wanted it in the second half,” Loenberg told them.
