Weiser’s Lady Wolverine varsity soccer team took a 7-1 conference loss in McCall on Tuesday, Sept. 24, but followed up the next day with a 2-0 home field win over Emmett’s Lady Huskies.
Describing what she had seen in McCall, Weiser’s head coach Trine Loenberg said the first half “was horrible.”
“They couldn’t figure it out,” Loenberg said. “The second half, if it wasn’t for that one goal (McCall) one minute before the end, it would have been 0-0. They started playing in the second half. All the goals came in the first half, so that’s why it looks brutal.
“I don’t know if it has something to do with the bus ride up there, or the altitude,” she said. “The area’s different up there. But, our JV did great, only lost 2-1. So, that was a good game.”
Weiser and Emmett came into Wednesday’s game with pretty evenly matched season records, 2-5-1 and 2-6-1, respectively.
The Wolverines scored their first goal early in the first half. Emmett’s goalkeeper missed the grab on a hard shot from the left by Weiser freshman Sophie Shirts (9), but had knocked it down right in front of the goal, while Weiser striker Isabella Froshiesar (7) was there to finish the shot and put Weiser up 1-0.
Both teams piled on defense strategies, with multiple players applying pressure to ball handlers on both sides.
Subbing in later in the half, Chloe Moses got her foot on the ball, dribbling it away from Emmett’s midfield on the right, and giving it a hard shot inside the 18-yard line to the net behind the goaltender, increasing Weiser’s lead to 2-0..
The second half was all hard fought defense. Weiser came close to scoring one more when Froshiesar made a solo runaway towards the goal, moving to the right before taking the shot, but it hit the top crossbar and bounced away.
The Wolverines put up 11 shots on goal, and Weiser goalkeeper Teagan Hawker made eight saves.
Looking forward to upcoming district playoffs, Loenberg agreed with her team they will be taking one game at a time.
“The first half was fine, but the second half, I have no idea,” Loenberg said. “You were all fighting until the end, and it’s okay to be frustrated.”
