Starting out this fall’s 2024 season, Weiser’s Lady Wolverines soccer team set one goal for themselves, and that has been to show steady improvement across the entire team with every game.
There might be some who would look at the final 5-0 loss against SRV conference leader Fruitland on Tuesday, Oct. 8, as just that, a loss, but it was a completely different perspective among the Weiser team in their after game huddle. After all, the last time the two teams had met up back in September, Fruitland had handed Weiser a 9-0 loss.
With an 11-0-1 conference record, Fruitland is sitting at the top of the SRV league, and ranked fifth on IdahoSports.com’s 4A power rankings. The Wolverines finished the regular season last week on Thursday with a 3-0 win over Parma, and a 5-6-1 conference record, good enough to be ranked 18th out of the 30 4A teams.
The Wolverines put up three shots on goal over the 80 minutes against the Grizzlies and Weiser goaltender Teagan Hawker recorded eight saves.
In Parma on Thursday, Oct. 10, the Lady Wolverines brought home a 3-0 win after freshman midfielder Chloe Moses scored a hat-trick in the first half to seal the Wolverines’ victory.
Two days later, the Wolverines made a run at a District 3 4A title in the first round of play on the home field against Emmett’s Vandals.
Emmett scored a blooper in the first half after the ball was juggled between a Weiser defender and an Emmett forward on the right side of the goal, and a tip rolled it into the net, putting the Vandals up 1-0 at the half.
Weiser’s Isabella Froshiesar scored in the second half to tie the game 1-1, with it going into a sudden-death overtime. Emmett managed to score first, ending Weiser’s 2024 season.
“The second half was amazing,” coach Trine Loenberg said. “We took over and had so many chances and then Isabella scored inside the final minute, so we went into sudden-death.
“My girls were amazing,” she added. “They played so well. You could see in the last 20 minutes of the first half they started playing, and in the second half, they just played. Now they knew exactly what to do. I would say it was a great finish for a great season. They got fourth place, they won a lot more games, and they were a lot happier. I think all-in-all, they are happy with what they accomplished.”
Loenberg added words of appreciation from herself and the team for WHS’s athletic director Bowe von Brethorst.
“Bowe has been an amazing support to our program and our games all season long,” Loenberg said.
