Weiser Elks Lodge members recently donated funds to Angel Wings Network and Citizens on Patrol (COPs).
Each of the nonprofit organizations was presented a $1,000 check during an informal ceremony held at the Elks Lodge, at 38 W. Idaho St. in Weiser, on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
“This is a great start to our year and we are excited to have it,” said Angel Wings Executive Director Mabel Dobbs. “We are thrilled to get this donation from the Elks.”
Angel Wings is a growing local organization that offers crucial programs and services to cancer patients and their families, including things like gas, grocery, and restaurant gift cards among many others.
Perhaps the most utilized program is Angel Wings’ transportation services for cancer patients who need assistance getting to and from doctors’ appointments and treatments, often in Boise.
Pat Greenwald, now in her 10th year with COPs, said the organization is likewise happy to receive the money.
“It will be used for equipment, training, and to help fund next year’s Christmas dinner,” she told the Signal American.
Volunteers recently served 254 free meals to community members on Christmas Day.
Elks Exalted Ruler Dick Sullender said that it is the Elks’ mission to serve the community in numerous ways, including donating funds when possible.
“We had the opportunity to give some money, and these are organizations that are well worthy of it,” he said.
Past Exalted Ruler Quincy Walla said the Weiser Elks was able to make the donations due to available funds at the state level.
“This was basically a one-time grant from the State of Idaho Elks Association,” he explained. “Funds were available to put into a grant that each lodge could participate in. We chose our recipients in October and then wrote the grants and submitted them to the state trustees for their approval.”
He said that it has been a while since the Weiser Elks donated to the COPs organization and decided, based on its service to the community, that it should receive funds.
He noted that Angel Wings was an obvious choice as a recipient based on the services and support it provides.
“I’ve known quite a few people who have benefitted from Angel Wings and relied on them, my wife included,” he said. “She just went through it a couple years ago, so it was just another good fit for these grants.”
