Weiser Korean War veteran receives Quilt of Valor

Charles Daniels was all of 16 years old when he left Baker City, Ore., for Portland to enlist in the U.S. Navy in 1952. He turned 17 while in Portland and was able to join the Navy with permission from his parents.
 “I was in a hurry to get there,” he said.

Author publishes book four in series on Weiser’s history

Ken Walston’s new book four of Weiser history covers the time period from the beginning of 1892 to the end of 1895. 
 During that period many changes took place and Walston details most of them. Few dig as deep into the details as Walston, who spends hours doing research.
 He uses a metaphor of the Sawtooth Mountains as a means of describing his history books. He instructs a person to draw a line across a string of those mountains so just the very tips are above the line. Imagine those tips represent historical events. 

Elks Lodge Harvest Night Open House

The Weiser Elks Lodge will host their Harvest Night Open House and Boise State Football Game Day on Saturday, Oct. 27 at their lodge located at 38 W. Idaho. Music by the Dorsey Band and appetizer buffet after the game. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in the lounge or from members.

Let’s Talk About It at the Weiser library

The Weiser Public Libary will participate in the Let’s Talk About It program. This month’s book will be “Growing Up” with the discussion to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 23 from noon to 2 p.m. at the library. Books are available at the library for check out. The third book will be “March” with discussion on Nov. 27.

Buddhist Temple bazaar

The 69th annual Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple Bazaar will be held on Sunday, Oct. 21, starting at noon in the basement of the temple, 286 SE 4th St., Ontario. Food bank at Cornerstone Assembly

The Idaho Mobile Food Bank comes to Cornerstone Assembly on the third Wednesday of each month. The semi arrives at 9:30 a.m. and the distribution begins at 10 a.m. Those seeking food items please line up in the parking lot on the corner of E. Main and E. 5th St. in Weiser. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Please bring containers for your food items and be patient. Community volunteers are also needed. If interested come at 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. to sign in and be briefed. Winifred (Toni) Schwartz

On Sept. 18, 2018, Winifred (Toni) “Nana” Schwartz passed away peacefully at the age of 85. 
 Toni was born Nov. 20, 1932 in Lancashire, England to John and Emily O’Brien. 
 Toni attended Catholic school and was a member of the Winstanley School of Dance that traveled all over England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. 

Robert L. Dickerson

Robert L Dickerson, 79, died quietly surrounded by friends and family on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018, at home in Shedd, Oregon.
 Robert was born March 1, 1939, in Weiser, to Dorothy and Marshall Dickerson Sr.
 Before graduation from Weiser High School, he ran the projector at the Weiser Star Theatre. After graduating he served in the U.S. Army, then afterwards helped in building the Brownlee Dam. He retired after working for the Quest Telephone company.

Shirley Dawn (Kerwin) Johnston

Born in Boise, Idaho, Shirley was the first child of Phillip and Edith Kerwin, arriving on Dec. 22, 1929, at St. Alphonsus Hospital.
 Shirley, her parents and her sister Mary Jo (Lang), lived within walking distance of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Boise, where they attended mass, and was also the location of her marriage to William J. Johnston on April 10, 1950.

Kiyoshi ‘Gish’ Amano

Kiyoshi “Gish” Amano passed away peacefully at his home on Oct. 2, 2018 at the age of 94. 
 Gish was born April 9, 1924 in Seattle, Wash., to Tokuchiyo and Shizue Amano. 
 He grew up in Lynden, Wash. and then moved to the Ontario/Weiser area in the mid 1940s. It was here where he met and married his wife Tamae “Mary” Wakasugi on Sept. 2, 1948. 
 Gish was a respected farmer in the area for over 70 years. He was also a dedicated member of the Ontario Community Church.
