Why our kids are great

Dear Editor:

 Having the privilege of observing during the last few years, local kids have made more than a modest impression on me. Having raised three kids of my own, coaching soccer, refereeing and training new hires, quite a cross section of youth has been encountered.

 Several examples shared, will underscore the reason to sit up and take notice. 

 Last football season, the ringing doorbell announced the arrival of three football players from our Wolverine crew. The pitch was to sell retail coupon books to secure jerseys. In order to have cash for them, they were requested to return. One did, on time. We completed our transaction. He then carefully listened to my questions. Your grades are good. You busted butt to make the squad. Why must “you” raise money for your jersey? Avoiding the opportunity to throw the powers that be under the bus, he shook my hand and moved on.

 Heading north on Friday, a rowdy group of senior citizens descends on the “Coffee Cabin,” for breakfast. Greeting us with a smile, is our hostess Muffin Mary. Assisting her is a pleasant young man, already a legend, Bigfoot Barista. Just culled out of an elk head, he prepared our meals with skill and a great attitude. No penalty points are assessed for needing a haircut.

 While still in high school, I watched this young lady evolve. The initial contact was when she showed up in my yard with a group of friends to rake leaves. Fast forward, while attending a political function, she generated a three minute impromptu response to an, issue based question. It should be noted that the response had no fillers. The content was void of like or um.  

 The common thread here; listen, communicate, plan and execute. 

 Parents and teachers have done a great job. Our hope here is that they stay around for a while. We can use the help.
