Small town newspapers keep the community informed
Editor:
I wish to comment on Nancy Grindstaff’s article titled “Local news belongs in front of its readers” in the August, 21, 2025 edition of the Weiser Signal American. It was most informative and valuable.
This article shared an important truth which some people have not considered, or are unaware of.
As an adult I have lived in both large cities and rural communities, I love the camaraderie of small towns, and a vital part of that camaraderie is the local newspaper.
The printed newspaper brings a sense of connected unity where neighbors and friends can look at the same edition(s) together and discuss what is happening around them in their own community. The printed newspaper makes this sharing much easier than sharing online. Also, if for whatever reason the grid goes down, we still have the printed word for posterity.
One of the few things which saddens me about Weiser is the recent lack of support for the local newspaper – the foundational hub of every small community.
Over the last year I have heard too many people’s excuses for not subscribing. Some say they do not have time to read it. This is a small paper and can be read in less than 30 minutes, or different sections can be read at different times. The other excuse I have heard is how expensive the price is. These people have not done any research. The Weiser Signal American is one of the most affordable small newspapers in the entire region. In Colorado and Wyoming, some small town newspapers cost approximately $50 a year, and there is one rural community in Washington State where the local paper costs more than $100 a year.
Having lived in other small communities, and written for other newspapers, I truly appreciate the attitude of this newspaper’s staff. I especially like that the staff truly listens to what their readers want.
In closing, I want to encourage readers to share Nancy Grindstaff’s article with friends and family so more citizens in our community will realize the value and the affordability of the Weiser Signal American.
Sincerely,
Crystal Linn
