Richard Roy Higgins
Richard Roy Higgins, 92, Boise, Idaho, formerly of Cambridge, Idaho, passed away Sept. 17, 2024, surrounded by family.
Born in Tulare, Calif., April 25, 1932, to Roy and Etta Higgins, the first of four children, Richard spent his early childhood in Nevada and Oregon before moving to Cambridge.
In 1944 after the death of his father, he and his brother, Ronnie moved in with their grandmother Sadie Higgins, eventually settling in with John and Anna Higgins and their growing family. Richard took on the role of big brother.
Richard attended school in Cambridge, excelling in athletics as the quarterback of the football team, high point man on the basketball team and home run king shortstop on the baseball team.
While in school, he met the love of his life, Lucile Manning. They were married in 1952 in Indian Valley, Idaho.
Soon after, Richard was drafted into the Army and after months of boot camp in Pasa Robles, Calif., he left Lucile and his newborn daughter Diane in August of 1953 for Korea where he served as a sergeant in the war.
Returning home in 1954 to his wife and young daughter Diane, he began a life of farming and ranching the Cambridge/Salubria area. Richard and Lucile had two more daughters, Kim and Kathy, and the whole family was blessed to live and work on the ranch, putting up hay and raising cattle.
Richard and Lucile retired and moved closer to Cambridge in 1997 where they built their dream home on eight acres.
Richard enjoyed woodworking, building many pieces of fine furniture, including a china cabinet, tables, desks, armoires, and cedar chests to name a few. He also enjoyed gardening, especially during strawberry season. He was an avid fisherman, enjoying camping and traveling with friends and family.
In 2023, Richard and Lucile moved to Boise to Brookdale Independent Living. As was true everywhere they went, they made friends and built relationships with many residents there.
Richard was preceded in death by brother Ron Higgins and sister Brenda Murphey, and brothers Alan, Johnny, and Paul Higgins.
He leaves behind his wife of 72 years, Lucile Higgins, a sister, Linda (Joe) Kunz, sister-in-law Mary Ann Higgins, brother Larry Higgins, sisters Marilyn (Tom) Taylor and Mary Teresa Higgins and brother Michael Higgins. He leaves his daughters Diane (Dave) Page, Kim (Aaron) Voshell and Kathy (Gary) Welch as well as grandchildren Matthew Page and Daniel (Jessica) Page, Riley Voshell and Kirby (Wakana) Voshell, Drew Welch and Brooke Welch, and great-grandchildren Soyoka and Ryunosuke Voshell.
Services will be Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at the Indian Valley Community Hall, Indian Valley, Idaho at 2 p.m., followed by a military salute at Indian Valley Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Indian Valley Community Church, 21 Indian Valley Road, Indian Valley, Idaho 83632
