This is me at 2 years old riding on the tractor with my Grandpa William H. Grasmick at his Grass Acre Dairy Ranch in Parma, Idaho. He was a devout Christian, a dedicated Democrat and loving in every way.
Lately, I feel his presence a lot amid all the chaos. He had so much respect for John F. Kennedy and Frank Church, especially for all they did for our country, Idaho and public lands.
When a family of immigrant Laotians moved to our small town, my Grandpa was the first to welcome them. They ended up living on the ranch, where he gave them work and their dignity. A powerful reminder of how empathy and compassion can shape a community.
They didn’t have shoes, so my Grandma Mary gave them some of her shoes because they had tiny feet. Kung Pao (the father) showed up at 4 a.m. to milk the cows proudly wearing women’s shoes. My Grandpa laughed, but soon after, he bought him a pair of rubber boots.
My love for travel to other countries and awareness of the world was nurtured by both of my grandparents.
Their teachings guide my actions and advocacy, even when the issues at hand do not directly affect me. That sense of empathy and understanding, rooted in real-life experiences, is what makes my work and voice so meaningful. What a beautiful legacy my grandparents left! I know my assignment.
Remember, all of us are from immigrants, who fled persecution, or were brought to America under duress, or sought better lives for themselves and their descendants. I have a copy of my great-grandparents manifest at Ellis Island. I know their story. God Bless us all.
