Hillcrest Cemetery ready for weekend visitors

The upcoming Memorial Day weekend is the busiest time of year for Hillcrest Cemetery. It is also the most beautiful weekend, as the green grass is punctuated by the many flowers which are brought to remember loved ones who have passed. 

 During the weekend Hillcrest staff will be available to help locate graves. They will be in the office on Indianhead Road Friday through Monday, ready to help with maps and directions. If you are looking for a grave please check in at the office first.

 The task of finding graves has been made easier this year due to the placement of signs on two corners of each section within the cemetery. This was made possible by a generous grant from the LOR Foundation which allowed us to produce the signs and set them in the ground. The sections were named long ago beginning with the original section which is at the center of the cemetery. Over time new sections were named from the first to the seventh. The signage should make it much easier to locate loved ones. 

 The LOR Foundation grant also made it possible to buy plates for unmarked graves. We are in the process of locating those graves and identifying them. There are dozens of them, so it will take some time to complete this project, but we will be glad that eventually all graves will be identified and their markers labeled with their occupants’ names.

 The Board would like to thank Herb and Kelly Haun for many volunteer hours spent to take care of the Indianhead Road frontage. Their work in burning weeds and sterilizing the ground between the gutter and sidewalk is immensely helpful. Look for rock to fill in this area in the future and make the northern border of the cemetery property look great.

 We always appreciate our staff who work hard to make the cemetery beautiful. Mowing, trimming, watering and weeding take up most of their time during this season and they take pride in making it look the best it can be.

 Again, Weiser’s Elks Lodge is heading up the placement of United States flags at the gravesites of U.S. military servicemen and women on Friday morning. As well, the Lodge is in charge of the raising and lowering of the display of flags at the south entry to the cemetery.
