Chili cook-off holds cash prizes

As part of this weekend’s downtown Harvest Festival a chili cook-off on Saturday has already drawn as many as 15 contestants, and there’s room for more. Just show up Saturday morning.
 “Contestants will bring their own tasting containers and utensils, but will keep all of the money votes they receive in their tip jars,” event organizer Patrick Nauman said. “There’s no entry fee.”

Special education manual change expands student access

A one-word change in Idaho’s Department of Education special education manual has opened the door for students with specific learning disabilities to receive needed support through school special education programs.
 During the Weiser School District’s August monthly meeting, WSD Special Education Director Angie Halvorson reported a pending change to the state’s manual, saying she would present the new version for adoption in September.

WSD’s 10-year modernization plan goes to State

Reporting to Weiser School District’s board members during the Monday, Sept. 9 monthly trustees meeting that 136 community members had completed a recent Weiser School District survey ranking spending priorities for a 10-year school modernization plan, Superintendent Kenneth Dewlen said he would be sending the local plan to the state the next day.
 “Here’s the 10-year plan (based on) $5.9 million we’re getting from the state,” Dewlen said. “We got an increase from $5.6 million that we just heard about a couple of days ago.”

City denies county’s conditional use request

 Washington County’s commissioners will be going back to the drawing board in search of a space to house a county prosecutor’s office after the Weiser City Council unanimously denied a conditional use permit request on a recently purchased East Main Street property. 

First art winners of new school year announced

 Members of the Four County Art Guild have selected the September school artist winners for the 2024-2025 school.
 The Guild has been awarding student artists at area schools for many decades on a monthly basis, with top winners receiving blue, red, and white ribbons, in addition to monetary awards, as well as honorable mention winners winning ribbons.

Hillcrest Cemetery Maintenance District is taking care of cemeteries

The Hillcrest Cemetery Maintenance District is a taxing district encompassing the same area as the Weiser School District. Its purpose is to oversee the upkeep of cemeteries within the district including Hillcrest Cemetery in Weiser and Mann’s Creek Cemetery. There are several other cemeteries on private property that are not part of its jurisdiction.

 The Washington County Weed Advisory Board will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024 at 7 p.m. at the Washington County Weed Dept., located at 1118 E. Court St., Weiser, Idaho.  The public is welcome to attend.

Walking Tour of historic Institute complex

The Weiser Architectural Preservation Committee and Snake River Heritage Center will host a walking tour of the old ‘Tute. The tour begins and ends at the Snake River Heritage Center auditorium. Please be aware that this tour includes climbing stairs and walking on uneven ground. There will be two tours on Saturday, Oct. 12, one at 10 a.m. and another at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Weiser Public Library or on the Snake River Heritage Center website. Tickets must be purchased in advance as space is limited.

 Leona Arlene Callahan, 81, passed away Sept. 24, 2024 in Emmett, Idaho. Leona was born Nov. 16, 1942 in Port Orchard, Wash. Arrangements are in the care of Potter Funeral Chapel, Emmett, Idaho.
