Weiser wrestling hosted another tri-meet with SRV competitor McCall and Vale this past Wednesday night.
This was senior night where senior wrestlers were recognized for their hard work and commitment to wrestling over the years. Among those recognized were Aaron Despain, Billy Nevarez, Bobby Nevarez, Maddox Stevens, Tristan McMahill, Trenton Hawker, Willie Sudderth, and Payzlee Wilkins. These seniors have been wrestling for a long time and have led their team well this season.
First, they took on McCall and gave up one match due to forfeit but did exceedingly well winning the match with a final of 61-15. Weiser won six matches by fall and to no surprise Trenton Hawker won by fall in just 26 seconds. Kaleb Grove also won by fall in 57 seconds. Mickel Drydale, Luke Sarich, Kash Cobb, and Willie Sudderth each won their respective matches by fall.
 Individual results vs. McCall were:
106 – Mickel Drydale won by fall.
113 – Andrew Sudderth won by forfeit.
120 – Blake Quinton won by forfeit.
126 – Cole Ingle won by forfeit.
138 – Luke Sarich won by fall.
145 – Stockton Young won by major decision.
152 – Kash Cobb won by fall.
160 – Willie Sudderth won by fall.
170 – Maddox Stevens won by decision.
182 – Lucas Goff lost by decision.
195 – Kaleb Grove won by fall.
220 – Trenton Hawker won by fall.
 Tristan McMahill lost by fall.
Weiser then had the opportunity to wrestle Vale. Vale is normally a good wrestling squad who competes well, but they gave up nine forfeits during the dual and that is difficult to overcome.
Weiser did forfeit at the 132 pound weight class and lost two others during the dual, but that is all the points that Vale could muster.
Hawker continued his senior night fight by winning his match by fall in 1:07. Luke Sarich also had a nice match winning by fall in 1:29.
 Individual results vs. Vale were:
106 – Mickel Drydale lost by fall.
113 – Andrew Sudderth won by forfeit.
120 – Blake Quinton won by forfeit.
126 – Cole Ingle won by forfeit.
138 – Luke Sarich won by fall.
145 – Stockton Young won by forfeit.
152 – Kash Cobb won by forfeit.
160 – Willie Sudderth lost by decision.
170 – Maddox Stevens won by decision.
182 – Lucas Goff won by forfeit.
195 – Kaleb Grove won by forfeit.
220 – Trenton Hawker won by fall.
285 – Tristan McMahill won by forfeit.
If tri-duals aren’t enough, Weiser wrestling hosted their 34th Annual Weiser Invitational Tournament this past weekend.  Weiser had 17 wrestlers competing in the tournament and gained experience, but it is important to note that not all wrestlers are allowed to contribute points to the team score.
Weiser did well, though, putting up 154 points and finishing in third place overall with 17 teams in attendance.
There is also a lot of seeding criteria involved in this tournament and it is a good chance to see how our wrestlers will do at the state level.
Weiser had one wrestler take first place. Kaleb Grove, a junior, has wrestled competitively and consistently this year. He is ranked fourth place in state ranking and beat the second place ranked wrestler in the 4A division to win the Weiser Invitational.
Grove wrestled three matches in the tournament due to a bye in the first round and won the first by fall and the last two rounds by decision. Grove contributed 24 points to his team’s score.  His record for the season stands at an impressive 39-4.
Grove wasn’t the only one on the podium for the Wolverines.  Finishing in third place are some familiar names this season, including Trenton Hawker, Maddox Stevens, Willie Sudderth, Kash Cobb, and Charlie Nevarez. Mickel Drydale was also a placer for the Wolverines coming in fourth.
Some of these gentlemen have been ranked in the top five in anticipation for state competition.  Hawker is ranked fourth as is Sudderth, and Stevens is ranked second.
The invitational was fun to watch especially in the finals.  Head Coach Chad Gibson can be extremely animated during these matches along with his assistant coaches.  Coach Gibson said, “There is a lot of energy at this tournament and it was nice to just get this one under our belt.  This tournament truly takes a village of people and I would like to thank my administration, coaches, the Weiser community, and all of our wives who step up and help out during this time.  We have people working absolutely everywhere during this tournament and it wouldn’t be possible without all of these people pitching in and helping out.”
Weiser finishes up SRV duals this week in Homedale on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Weiser will then have a bit of a breather and compete in districts on Feb. 18 in Payette.
