Wolverines play in the Bill Betts Tournament

Weiser baseball was busy the weekend before spring break with three games during the 8-team Bill Betts Memorial tournament.
Weiser played against Melba to start the tourney off and just
couldn’t quite get the momentum that they had the first time that they played them. Weiser would end up losing the contest 5-4 in the last inning.
Jarret Mink started off the pitching for the Wolverines and lasted five and one-third inning giving up two runs on seven hits and walking zero.
Weiser had six batters hit the ball, with Brett Spencer leading the way with three hits. Both Spencer and newcomer Koda Coers hit doubles for the Wolverines and added some nice offense for the game. Weiser had one error during the game.
“It was exciting to be invited to the Bill Betts tournament this year,” head coach, Bowe von Brethorst said. “We get to see teams that we wouldn’t think about playing and then some of our own 3A competition. Going 2-1 in a tournament is a pretty great outcome and it is exciting to see some bats coming alive and where our pitching ends up after so many innings,” von Brethorst added.
Weiser vs. Payette
The same day, Weiser faced 3A competitor Payette. Weiser won handily 18-9 recording 15 hits on the day.
Tyler Pope drove in five runs on three hits. He hit a single in the third inning, a double in the fourth, and a triple in the sixth.
In the very first inning Beau Shields earned two RBI’s with a nice triple into right center. In the sixth inning, besides Pope’s triple, Weiser also had singles from Dayton Turrentine and Jack Burke, and a double by Kooper von Brethorst.
Payton Albertson started off on the mound for the Wolverines and went one full inning allowing no hits and recording two strikeouts. Weiser then had a battery of pitchers with von Brethorst going two innings for the win, Pope going for one inning, Turrentine for a third and Ray Calley for two and two-thirds to close it out.
Mink was hot on the bases for the Wolverines leading with six stolen bases out of a total of 12 for the team as a whole. Pope, von Brethorst, Spencer, Burke, and Shields each had multiple hits for the winning Wolverines.
Weiser vs. Firth
The next day the Wolverines would face Firth, which is always a little nerve wracking not knowing what a team will bring to the table.
There was little need to worry with Spencer getting four hits and leading Weiser past Firth 17-6.
Spencer had a double in the third, followed by a single, and added another single and a double in the fifth. Weiser once again racked up a slew of hits recording 14 for the day.
The offense was pretty amazing throughout the game, but the fifth inning was especially productive including doubles from Pope, Coers, and Spencer, walks by Shields and von Brethorst, and a single hit by Willy Shirts.
Shirts would add some mojo himself on the mound getting the start for the Wolverines. Shirts lasted four innings, allowed seven hits and six runs while striking out six batters and walking one. Coers would show off his pitching abilities, relieving Shirts for the final inning.
Weiser would record 13 RBI’s total. Contributing two each were von Brethorst, Shirts, Pope, and Turrentine and Spencer ended the game with three. Shields and Coers would each add one to the totals as well.
Weiser will stay busy this week starting Monday against Caldwell, Tuesday, hosting both junior varsity and varsity vs. McCall, and again on Thursday vs. Melba at home.
