Wolverines have successful week with four wins

The Weiser Wolverines went to Fruitland last Monday night to pick up another conference win 11-10.
The contest was one sided the first two innings with Weiser taking the lead 5-0, but in the bottom of the third inning Fruitland answered the call and scored 5 runs of their own making it a tie game.
Fruitland would add 3 more runs in the bottom of the fourth and an additional run in the fifth and sixth innings.
Weiser did add 2 runs in the sixth inning making the score 10-7 going into the final inning of the game.
Jack Shirts came to the plate in the top of the seventh inning and had a nice hit to the short stop to get on base. A couple of wild pitches put J. Shirts on third base. Brett Spencer hit a shot to center field to get on base and score J. Shirts. Spencer would get to second base on a pass ball and Willy Shirts hit a hard ball to second and was thrown out at first, but he did his job in advancing Spencer to third base. Dylan Turrentine hit a ball to right field to score Spencer followed by Payton Albertson homering on a first pitch strike, bringing the score to 11-10.
The momentum would stop there and the Wolverines needed desperately to hold them on defense which they did, however they allowed a single during the inning along with hitting a batter with a pitch.
Weiser put up some great stats offensively with 17 hits for the evening and 10 RBIs. The Wolverines were also patient at the plate walking 6 times and working the opposing pitcher’s pitch count.
Brett Spencer, Payton Albertson, and Tommy Johnson each had 2 RBIs followed by W. Shirts, Turrentine, Kaleb Grove, and Brock Spencer with one a piece.
Hitting was a strong suit with all but 2 Wolverines recording a hit. J. Shirts went 4 for 5 at the plate, Brett Spencer went 3 for 5, and Payton Albertson went 2 for 3. Willy Shirts recorded both a double and a triple during the contest along with Jack Burke and Brett Spencer adding doubles as well. Working the pitch counts Brock Spencer was walked 3 times in the game.
Defensively Weiser did well in stopping some momentum from happening and ending the innings. Dylan Turrentine got the start on the mound and went two innings for the Wolverines tallying 4 hits and 4 runs and striking out 3 batters. Willy Shirts came in to deal and went two and a third innings recording 5 runs on 4 hits and striking out 3. Kaleb Grove took a turn with one and two thirds innings allowing 1 run on 0 hits and striking out 2 and finishing the game was Jack Shirts with 1 inning allowing 0 runs on 1 hit and striking out 1 batter.
Homedale, April 13
The Wolverines then travelled to Homedale on Wednesday evening to play on a turf field and gain another conference win 6-4.
Kaleb Grove got the start for Weiser and lasted three and a third innings, allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits and struck out 3 Trojan batters.
Willy Shirts came in on relief and got the win for the Wolverines going three and two-thirds innings and recording 2 runs on 4 hits and struck out 2 batters.
Homedale took the lead in the third inning 2-0, but the Wolverines answered in the fifth inning with 4 runs while Homedale added 1 to their totals.
In the sixth inning each team would remain scoreless and then in the seventh inning the Wolverines added 2 more runs and Homedale was only able to answer with 1, giving Weiser the win.
The game was not without controversy with Homedale’s catcher blocking the plate before he had the ball and Weiser’s catcher, Jack Burke sliding into the Homedale catcher. According to the rule book Burke should have been safe, but he was called out. Weiser then settled in and played good defense, showing everyone that they could overcome adversity.
On offense, Weiser had 12 hits to score the 6 runs of the night and collected another 6 RBIs. Dylan Turrentine went 3 for 4 during the evening with 2 RBIs followed by Brock Spencer who went 2 for 3 at the plate. Lots of Wolverine batters went 2 for 4 at the plate including Jack Shirts, Brett Spencer, and Willy Shirts who are in the 2, 3, and 4 batting spots respectively. Turrentine and W. Shirts both collected doubles to help the Wolverines and Brock Spencer and W. Shirts both stole a base during the contest.
Head Coach Bowe von Brethorst was happy with the conference wins. “These boys have shown me this week that we can get behind, but we never give up. They have been playing ball for the majority of their lives and they know if they keep working things have a way of working out,” von Brethorst said.
Mountain Home,
April 15
Weiser finished the week with a double header in Mountain Home and won each game last Friday. The first game Weiser won 4-2 and the second game was 2-1.
Pitching controlled each game with few hits being recorded by Mountain Home.
Dylan Turrentine started for the Wolverines in the first game and Koda Coers came in on relief allowing only 6 hits. Willy Shirts handled the majority of the second game and again Koda Coers handled relief only allowing 6 hits total.
Hitting for the Wolverines was interesting with all but 2 Wolverine batters getting a hit during the first game, but every batter got exactly 1 hit in the second game.
Weiser will face McCall at home on Monday in a JV/varsity double header. Weiser will be the guests on the scoreboard since McCall’s field isn’t ready for play. Weiser will then travel to Payette on Wednesday and take the rest of the week off.
 Go Wolverines!
