Wolverines advance conference record to 2-0

With a week between games, Weiser’s varsity boys soccer team earned their second conference win this season on Thursday, Sept. 8, beating the Ambrose School Archers 2-0.
A private pre-K-12 school in Meridian, the Ambrose school’s boys soccer program moved into the Idaho High School Activities Association 3A division a couple of years ago, making a total of five 3A schools in District 3 with boys soccer programs.
The Wolverines put up a total of 13 shots against the Archers over 80 minutes, with two hitting paydirt in the second half.
Weiser’s Brian Munoz (#6) took a corner kick at around 20 minutes into the half, finding Toren Walker (#3) in front of the goal. Anticipating a low kick, the Archers goalkeeper dove low but not before Walker sent the ball past him, centering it in the net behind him.
The Wolverines second goal came with just six minutes left on the clock. Walker passed to Carlos Lopez (#7) on the left side of the goal, and Lopez curved it into the back right corner.
Weiser sophomore midfielder Jovani Ramirez (#11) came close with another shot on goal for the Wolverines. The Archers sophomore goalie Aiden Kinney moved out from the goal for a save, but missed and Ramirez was on his right for a hard kick. The ball smacked off of the right post, bouncing out of bounds.
The Archers put up a consistent defense throughout the game, limiting Weiser to a total of three shots on goal total.
Wolverine  sophomore goaltender Diego Dalgadillo recorded 10 saves, and Weiser’s defensive line held the Meridian players back from any close shots on goal.
“The boys had three great practices last week, working on passing and passing combinations,” Coach Kathy Bokides said. “They were rewarded on Thursday with a 2-0 win.
“We have a very busy week ahead, starting with Ontario on Monday, Payette on Tuesday, and McCall on Thursday,” she added. “McCall is leading our district right now and we’re looking forward to this match, considering they knocked us out of the district tournament last year in a shoot out.”
Idaho’s air quality degraded severely Friday and over the weekend, canceling both practice and a scheduled game at Emmett on Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service an air quality alert was issued through Monday at 3 p.m., with some chances of precipitation and thunderstorms during the week.
With this week’s at-home schedule, including McCall on Thursday and Baker on Monday, the Wolverines are looking for the air to clear up and to get back on the field in competition.
