Wolverine golfers play through crazy weather with the boys taking third place

On Saturday, April 9, the Weiser Wolverine golf team hosted over 20 teams for their annual golf fundraiser at Rolling Hills Golf Course. Coach Jordan Edwards along with her staff and athletes would like to thank all of those that came out to support their fundraiser. She stated that they appreciate the amazing support.
“Our community is generous and is a big reason we are successful. The money raised will be used to pay for gear, travel expenses, and golf passes for players that earned them. They truly are thankful for the support and the generosity,” Edwards said.
The Wolverine girls’ varsity team was scheduled to travel to Buhl on Monday, April 11 for an 18-hole tournament. Due to our wild weather last week, the tournament was cancelled.
The Snake River Valley conference golf season is in full swing. All teams meet up at a local golf course about once a week to play a round of golf in small groups. At the end of the match, individual scores are added up. The top four scores of a five member team are used to determine the total team score. It is a great system that allows the teams a chance to work on their game in a pressure situation, but with no bearing on the results for the district tournament where the teams will be vying for the chance to go to the state tournament.
On Tuesday, April 12 the SRV teams played at Scotch Pines Golf Course in Payette. In typical Idaho fashion, the golfers and spectators were greeted with all four seasons of weather during the competition. Hail, snow, rain, wind, and sunshine made an appearance.
The Weiser varsity boys’ golfers played through the crazy weather and ended the round with a team score of 192, earning third place. The Fruitland Grizzlies brought home first place team awards with a 171. The Homedale Trojans finished 6 strokes back from Fruitland with a score of 177 and second place.
Carter Williams of Weiser took medalist honors with a score of 37. Jacob Hamann of Fruitland finished 3 strokes back with a score of 40 and second place. Chris Sunderland also of Fruitland scored well finishing with a 41.
The Wolverines were led by Williams with his 1 over par score of 37. Fellow Wolverine and teammate Devyn Young finished with a 48, Calvin Clapperton a 52, Luke Sarich had a 55 and Braxton Franek had a 61.
With only three golfers competing on Tuesday, the Weiser Wolverines did not have enough golfers to make up a team. Jasi Yraguen of Weiser finished the day with an individual score of 57. One stroke back of Yraguen, Wolverine Paige Jensen ended the day with a 58 and Lucy Hickey close behind had a 61.
The McCall Vandal girls’ varsity team took home the first place team honors with a score of 240. Fruitland turned in a score of 248 earning second place and Payette had a 256 for third place.
Tea Uranga of Homedale earned first place medalist honors with a 3 over par score of 39. The rest of the girl’s field of play was significantly back from Uranga’s score of 39.
The Wolverine girls traveled to Baker for an 18-hole tournament on Monday, April 18. No scores were available at the time of printing. The SRV golf teams will be playing at Homedale’s home course, River Bend, out of Wilder on Wednesday, April 20.
