Wolverine girls take first place in SRV conference match

The Weiser Wolverine girl golfers played in their first 18 hole tournament of the 2022 season on Monday, April 18. The Wolverines traveled to Baker City, Ore., to play at Quail Ridge Golf Course.
This nice par 70 course is fun to play, giving the high school golfers a good look at elevated holes, water hazards, a few wide open fairways, and then some tight ones.
The Weiser girls had a good showing, playing solid golf at the Baker Invite tournament. Against nine other schools, Weiser finished the day in third place with a total score of 453. Baker took second on their home course with a score of 444. La Grande was the top team for the day with a score of 423, earning first place.
Homedale’s Tea Uranga was the medalist for the day with a score of 78, only 8 over par.
Weiser teammates Jasi Yraguen and Lucy Hickey both shot 108 for the 18 holes. Paige Johnson had a 112. Serena Boles had a 125 and Hannah Grace had a 147. It is always good for the teams to get an 18 hole tournament in before the district tournament, which is also 18 holes. It ends up being a great training session in preparation for the late season tournaments.
On Wednesday, April 20, the Homedale Trojans hosted the weekly Snake River Valley golf match at their home course River Bend Golf Course out of Wilder. A few of the Weiser boys had golfed 18 holes in an ice breaker tournament in March.
The SRV overall boys team scores remain tight. Homedale came out on top with a 9 hole team score of 181. Only one stroke back McCall earned second place with a score of 182. Fruitland had a total of 193 and Weiser 198.
Carter Williams of Weiser won medalist honors with a score of 39, 3 over par. Luke Henry of Homedale and Tate Ova of McCall tied for second with a score of 41.
Along with the 39 from Carter Williams, Weiser’s Devyn Young was in the hunt with a 44. Braxton Franek had a 57, Kash Cobb had a 58, and Luke Sarich had a 61.
The Weiser girls, coming off a good day on Monday, capitalized and took first place at Wednesday’s SRV match with a team score of 207. McCall took second with a score of 220 and Homedale put together a team for the first time this season and earned third place with a score of 226.
Freshman Lucy Hickey had a fabulous day on this difficult course, coming in with a 47. Jasi Yraguen had a 50, Paige Johnson a 54, Hannah Grace a 56, and Serena Boles had a 66. Tea Uranga took medalist honors for the girls with a score of 39.
The Weiser boys played at Quail Ridge in Baker on Monday, April 25. No score was available at the time of printing. The girls will travel to Timberstone Golf Course on Wednesday, April 27.
