Wolverine girls cross country team qualifies for state

The Weiser High School cross country teams competed in the District III championships in Homedale on Oct. 18. In a very close race, the girl’s qualified for the state championships as a team and Josh Kelley also qualified for state as an individual runner in the men’s race.
Weiser’s Kylee Quinton finished in first place with a time of 19:39.02. Claire Matthews came in second place with a time of 20:16.95.  They were followed by Megan Atkinson of Parma in third place with a time of 21:11.74. Weiser’s third runner Kendall Rynearson finished seventh with a time of  21:56.17. Sarah Henderson finished with a season’s best time of 22:29.43 in 10th place. Hayden Samson finished in 24th place with a time of 25:33.4.
As a team, the Weiser girls tied with McCall for overall team score. Meaning the district champions were decided by a tie breaker. Unfortunately for Weiser, in the event of a tie breaker, the times of the sixth runners from each team are used. Weiser only has five runners and therefore automatically lost the tie breaker, putting Weiser as the runner-up in the district championship. However, both the first and second place teams qualify for the state championship.
“Losing the tie breaker in the girls’ meet was definitely hard. These girls won it last year and worked just as hard if not harder this year. The competition is just different year to year,” Hale said.
In the mens’ race, Jack McMannus of McCall had the fastest time of the day with a time of 16:47.47. He was followed by George Spiers of McCall with a time of 17:37.7. Parma’s Bronson Beus came in third place with a time of 17:50.82. Weiser’s fastest runner in the men’s race was Josh Kelley who finished in seventh place with a time of 18:13.32. Judah Parsons finished with a time of 19:01.22. Levi Huston finished with a time of 19:49.64. Grant Walker finished with a personal record time of 21:32.37. Weiser’s fifth runner of the day was Wyatt Erickson with a time of 22:20.86. As a team, Weiser finished in fourth place. By finishing in the top ⅓ of total competitors, Kelley qualified for the state championship as an individual runner.
“Josh was one of the hardest workers all year and it showed through his times. He’ll likely get one last PR this season at state,” Hale said.
The State Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29 in Lewiston, Idaho at 1 p.m. for the womens’ race and 2 p.m for the mens’.
