Wolverine boys dominate Fruitland in 9-0 route

The boys’ Weiser High School soccer team ran the field with a young Fruitland team Tuesday, Sept. 7, walking away with a 9-0 victory, a substantial score in the sport of soccer.
The win moved the Wolverines’ win-loss conference record to 2-0, and 4-1 overall just two weeks into the 2021 season.
Taking 16 shots on goal in the first half, two Wolverine attempts found the back of the net.
Edgar Ayala dribbled in close, crossing the ball behind Fruitland’s goalie Raul Chavez, to the right corner for the first.
Marcos Tarelo put the second goal past a substitute keeper after Chavez was yellow-carded during a Weiser goal attempt, and was forced to sit out the direct penalty kick.
Wolverine goalie, Justin Padilla, recorded two saves in the first half, with Chavez stopping seven.
During the second half, Wolverine Diego DelGadillo took over in the goal box, with Padilla moving to halfback. DelGadillo made three saves on Grizzly goal attempts during the half, but most of the action was to be found at the other end of the field, where Weiser’s offense attacked the goal with 17 shots, netting seven.
Wolverine Brian Munoz scored the first two goals, putting Weiser ahead 4-0. Defender Pablo Hernandez moved up to send the ball over the goal for the fifth Weiser goal. Credited with two scoring assists in the game, halfback Alfonso Hernandez netted the sixth.
Weiser senior halfback, Ben Johnson, moved hard to the net with the ball to land the seventh goal. Ayala moved up close and was able to zip the ball by Chavez for the eighth, and Johnson charged through with the ball on the left side to end Weiser’s scoring with the ninth goal.
The Wolverines recorded six off sides, as well as a pair of yellow cards during the game. Head Coach Kathy Bokides advised her team they would need to be ready to play sharp and disciplined in upcoming games against more seasoned teams.
“You will be challenged and learn a lot more over the next few games,” she told her players.
Weiser vs. Ontario
In a defensive scrapper in Ontario on Thursday, Sept. 9, the boys varsity managed to hold onto a 1-0 lead until just inside the 90-minute mark, when the Tigers took advantage of a ricocheted ball off of the cross bar to tie the game up.
In the first half, the Wolverines netted a goal after 22 minutes when the Tigers goalie moved out in the box and missed grabbing a shot by halfback Alfonso Hernandez.
Weiser goalie Justin Padilla recorded seven saves, giving up only one in a big jump attempt to divert the Tiger shot over the goal, but it deflected down off the crossbar in front of the goal line.
Ontario’s keeper made seven saves, as well, with the Wolverines overshooting the ball another seven times.
Wolverine defenders gave up only two corner kicks to Ontario’s four. The Tigers were unable to capitalize on seven penalty calls against Weiser.
The 1-1 tie brought the Wolverines season record to 4-1-1, with the next four scheduled games taking them on the road to Sun Valley Community School, The Ambrose School in Meridian, to Payette, and finally McCall.
In junior varsity action Thursday, the Wolverines beat the Tigers 3-0. Weiser’s JV had possession of the ball for most of the game, taking numerous shots on goal. Santiago Perez scored two of the goals, with Gonzalo Perez netting a penalty kick.
“It was a good game to help us be ready for Saturday’s game against Community School,” said coach Zach Rose.
On the road
The JV Wolverines caught up to Sun Valley Community School’s 2-0 lead in the second half of the Saturday, Sept. 11 game. Santiago Perez scored a goal on a free kick, then followed with an assist to Carlos Garcia, with the game ending in a 2-2 tie.
Weiser’s varsity met the Cutthroats head on in a test against the 2020 3A state champions, taking a close 2-0 loss.
The Wolverines took four shots on goal in the first half, with Sun Valley’s goalie Blake Currey stopping all of them. Wolverine keeper Justin Padilla stopped eight goal attempts by the Cutthroats, with one getting past him in the first half.
Tough defense by Weiser held Sun Valley to one goal in the second half, but the Cutthroats defense returned the favor, denying the Wolverines a single attempt for a shot on goal. Padilla was credited with five saves in the second half.
