The Weiser Wolverines put up a tough fight against Payette in a do or die situation to continue on through districts in a chance to go to the State Championship.  This is not a position that Weiser has been in for a few years and it was a hard thing to process.
Three seniors played their last game in Payette this past Tuesday and came up short 5-1.
Payette got their offense going sooner than the Wolverines could and despite throwing everything they had at the game, they couldn’t get caught up.
The Wolverines had 3 hits and no RBIs in comparison to Payette’s 8 hits and 5 RBIs.
Weiser was led by Jack Shirts, Finn Dolton, and Weston Black who each went one for three at the plate. Defensively, the Wolverines had a couple of errors that didn’t help their cause.
Kaleb Grove got the start for the Wolverines and recorded four runs on six hits and struck out two batters. Dylan Turrentine came in and relieved Grove after three innings and pitched three of his own.  He recorded one run on two hits and struck out two batters as well.
Coach Bowe von Brethorst stated, “This is unfamiliar territory for us and no one is happy about it, but we have to do the things in the off season to get us back to where we want to be next year.”
Consistency may be the key to the upcoming season, “We saw some good baseball this year, mixed in with some things that made us shake our heads.  We just couldn’t get it all to come together at the right time and that hurts,” von Brethorst said. “It hurts because we are not used to being in this position, it hurts for the three seniors who may not have another baseball game in front of them, and it hurts the coaches to take a step back and see what more we could have done,” he added.
The Wolverines will obviously re-group and have a new plan for the next season.  Good job Wolverines!
Weiser is also still hosting the 3A State Baseball Championship this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Northwest Nazarene University. Concessions will help benefit the Weiser baseball team, so if you are still looking for something to do, come and watch!
