Winterguard plans multiple community performances

Weiser High School colorguard instructor Mimi Rodriguez has now been coaching the marching band auxiliary team for four years.
For the last two years, Rodriguez has volunteered her time to bring back to Weiser a part of colorguard the community has not seen in a very long time: Winterguard.
The idea took form last winter. With colorguard being Rodriguez’s passion, since her freshman year of high school in 2005, she felt growing the program with this new addition would be worth volunteering her time.
She and band director Jake  Fortin got the group started with 20 girls last winter and reduced the group to 10 this season. The group practices every morning during the zero hour before school at 7:30 a.m.
The winterguard recently performed a Christmas-themed show during halftime at one of the basketball games in December and marched in the Weiser holiday parade. They are also preparing their performance of the “Avenger” theme song at the annual band dinner on Jan. 12 as a tribute to Stan Lee. They are also hoping to perform another number for the community at the end of the season.
Not only have the girls worked on their dancing, flag and rifle skills as a group, but their dedication to the group has inspired them to go above and beyond the scheduled performances. Some of the members have also taken on learning how to choreograph individual, small group and duet performances.
Rodriguez said the girls are hopeful to perform some of these shows during the Weiser High School talent show in the spring.
“These young ladies have worked hard this year and never cease to amaze me with their passion and dedication to colorguard.  I am so proud of the group of ladies that I have been blessed with this season. I am looking forward to many more triumphs,”  Rodriguez said.
The winterguard team is led by captain Kassidi Wall. Other members include Tessa Kimball, Emily Barnes, Emily Abramson, Emilee Marvin, Krystalynn Epperson, Luisa Grimaldo, Sierra Vipperman, Ashlee Lucas and Kindel Montero.
