Wolverines also earned a berth to the 3A Idaho State Championships on Feb. 16-18 at Skyview High School

In the second round of the District Tournament, the Weiser Wolverines on the road, defeated the Fruitland Grizzlies 66-44.

The win sends the Wolverines to the District Championship game where they will face the Parma Panthers on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in Parma.
Both Weiser and Parma have earned berths into the 3A Idaho State Championships that will take place at Skyview High School in Nampa, Feb. 16-18.
The intense game started out with Weiser scoring first, with Mattie Shirts making a move from the elbow, driving in for 2 points.
Fruitland added four unanswered points until Weiser’s Kailee Lerew saw an opening, driving in for a lay-in.
The first continued with both teams playing tough defense and capitalizing on offense with good ball movement and scoring on the inside.
The teams were evenly matched – except for a tenacious Wolverine defense that fought hard for every ball, battled for rebounds, and dove for loose balls.
A Weiser steal by M. Shirts resulted in a lay-in by Ellie Shirts, tying the game again – 10 all.
With 46 seconds remaining, Jasi Yraguen scored for Weiser with a rebound put back – game tied – 12 all.
Lerew was a force to be reckoned with, playing lights out defense and consistently scoring for Weiser. With 16 seconds left in the first, Lerew stole the ball then converted, was fouled and made her free throw for 3-points.
At the end of the first, Weiser 15, Fruitland 14.
Fruitland struck first in the second with a bucket inside.
Weiser, determined to keep the defensive pressure strong, created offensive opportunities after multiple steals. The Wolverines increased their lead steadily throughout the second quarter.
Kendall Rynearson capped the half off with a strong rebound put back for 2 points, giving Weiser a 12-point lead, 33-21.
Weiser came out of the locker room with the same focus and drive they had in the first half.
A minute and a half into the third, Brady Reed found Lerew open for a bucket beyond the arc – Weiser 36, Fruitland 22.
Fruitland answered with their own three.
With 2 minutes to go, Weiser surged when Macy Maloney found Tobie Noyer in the corner for 3 points. On the next two trips to defense, M. Shirts picked up a couple of steals where she put 4 points on the board for Weiser.
The third ended Weiser 48, Fruitland 38.
A minute into the fourth, Maloney found Lerew at the top for 3 for Weiser.
Fruitland brought the game within nine with 6:20 to go, but Weiser turned on the gas. Noyer fed Lerew in the corner for another three. Soon afterwards, Maloney had a rebound put back.
Lerew and E. Shirts both added lay-ins off steals, giving Weiser an 18-point lead.
The Wolverines worked as a team with tremendous defensive pressure and battling hard for every rebound, Weiser was able to turn their steals and rebounds into points that was just too much for Fruitland to handle.
In the final 3 minutes, the Wolverines had buckets from Shirts on a baseline in-bounds play, from Lerew on deep 18-foot 2-pointer, and a rebound put back from Hannah Samson.
After four quarters of play, Weiser won by 22, 66 to 44.
Lerew led the Wolverines with 20 points, M. Shirts close behind with a solid 18. Noyer and E. Shirts each added 6 points. Reed, Yraguen, and Rynearson contributed 4 each. Maloney and Samson both with 2 points.
