Weiser tennis team looking sharp going into district competition

The Weiser High School tennis team, under the direction of first-year head coach Scott Manser, has amassed a 9-2-1 season heading into district competition.
“We’ve had a good season,” Manser said. “Our two losses were against Parma. Overall, the team is doing really well and we are looking forward to districts.”
The meeting to decide seeding was held Tuesday evening in Weiser.
Of particular note is 2021 defending state singles champion Emma Tolman, a senior who has gone undefeated this year and will be looking to repeat. Tolman, who finished with a 19-2 record, lost the district championship last season to Parma’s Austyn Harris only to turn around and beat her for the state championship.
Also going undefeated this year is 2021 district competitor Kristy Bake who seeks to improve on last year’s mark.
Manser said the boys’ team has made big improvements over last year.
“All of our boys are doing well this year,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of really good freshmen come in and play. Kolin Cook is a freshman, but he is playing line 1 boys singles and has been doing really well, as well as boys’ doubles, Charlie Woods and Hunter McClellan. They are our line 1 doubles and they are playing really well. We’ve also got two great teams in our girls’ doubles, and mix is doing well, too. Everyone has done a really good job this year. It’s been really fun and I’m very happy with the play of everyone on the team.”
District begins this Thursday, May 12, with action winding up on Saturday, May 14 in Weiser, the Wolverines serving as district tournament host.
Boys’ and girls’ singles will be playing in Parma Thursday and Friday, with girls’ doubles in Payette on those days. Boys’ doubles and mixed doubles will be in Fruitland on Friday and Thursday.
Championship matches will be held in Weiser on Saturday, along with third-place matches.
