The Weiser High School tennis team earned two easy wins over Emmett and Caldwell during the first week of play this season.
Weiser traveled to Emmett on Thursday and beat the Bulldogs 10-2, dropping only two matches in the afternoon contest.
In the boys singles competition, Weiser’s No. 1 singles player Bryce Bake didn’t have much trouble putting Paxton Gregory away quickly in straight sets. Bake took the match 6-0, 6-0.
In the No. 2 singles spot, Isaac To’omalatai picked up another win for Weiser by defeating Emmett’s Gabe King in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Weiser also won both boys doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Layten Tolman and Pedro Ixta won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Playing in the No. 2 spot, Branson Ward and Hunter McClellan beat their opponents in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Weiser’s No. 1 singles player Grace Soulen is undefeated so far this season. She beat Halie Allen of Emmett in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 singles player Andrea Bouvia beat Abigale Church without giving up a game 6-0, 6-0 and Ebbe King, playing in the No. 3 singles spot, had a competitive match against Emmett’s Isabelle Alder, but earned a win for Weiser 6-4, 6-4.
Weiser coach Angie Soulen said King did a great job of outlasting her opponent and played strong at the net.
“She’s only played for the team for two years and is a senior. We wish we could have had her sooner,” Soulen said.
Weiser’s Sienna McClellan and Bentley Weldon had to work hard for the win against a tough Emmett duo in girls doubles. It was the marathon match of the afternoon and took three sets to decide a winner. Weiser won the first set 6-2, but Emmett came back to win the second set 6-2. The Weiser team edged out their Emmett opponents in the third set 7-6.
The No. 2 doubles team of Kristy Bake and Denica McClellan dropped only one game in their victorious match over the Emmett team of Ali Alviso and Samia Aguillar. The Weiser team won 6-1, 6-0.
In mixed doubles, Weiser’s Emma Tolman and Nate Lattin won their match 6-1, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles team of Brylee Williams and Brityn Seward dropped their hard-fought match to Emmett’s Kade Garner and Brooklyn Willis 6-7 (3), 6-7 (3).
Weiser’s coaches were happy with the No. 2 doubles match. Williams and Seward, who happen to be cousins, played into the dark under the lights. All the other matches were over and the entire team focused on their match.
“They played a great match taking both sets to tiebreakers. They didn’t get the win but it’s matches like that that are worth 10 practices in improvement value,” Soulen said.
Even though some of the matches, such as boys singles, were not real competitive for the Weiser players, Soulen said it’s always good to be on the court competing.
During matches against inexperienced players, it’s a good time for players to work on weaknesses, take risky shots and place serves, she said.
