Weiser in state playoffs with 28-13 win over Marsh Valley

The Weiser Wolverines ran over Marsh Valley’s defense in Friday’s 3A state play-in game, picking up 359 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in a convincing 28-13 win on the Eagles’ home field.
 Weiser moves on to the quarterfinals in the 3A state football championships with the win at Marsh Valley. The Wolverines will play Timberlake on Saturday afternoon. at Timberlake.
 Marsh Valley came into Friday’s play-in game with a 4-4 record overall. Their last game was Oct. 25 and it was a big win over American Falls 35-14.
 Weiser had the better record at 7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Wolverines only loss of the season came at the hands of the Homedale Trojans in the last regular season game for both teams on Oct. 25.
 The play-in game at Marsh Valley was close in the first quarter with the scored tied at 7-7.
 The Eagles scored first with 5:51 left on the clock in the first period. After moving the ball down the field, Marsh Valley’s Hunter Roche scampered into the endzone for an 8-yard rushing touchdown and the Eagles first points.
 It looked like the first period might end with Marsh Valley getting the only score. But with 1:02 left in the first quarter, Weiser quarterback Brett Spencer connected with Tim Reed for a 16-yard pass and  a touchdown.
 A competitor at every level, Spencer had a double-double during the game, passing for more than 100 yards and rushing for more than 100 yards. Weiser had 474 yards of offense in Friday’s game, and Spencer accounted for 220 yards of the total.
 Weiser scored another touchdown in the second quarter, when Ande Jensen ran the ball in from 9 yards out to give the Wolverines a 14-7 lead with 6:11 left in the first half. Weiser went into the locker room at halftime up 14-7.
 With 3:37 left in the third quarter, Weiser speedster Jack Burke broke open a big run for 75 yards into the endzone. Burke found the open field and no Eagle could catch him. Weiser added to the lead 21-7.
 Marsh Valley was able to move the ball down the field once again and with less than two minutes left in the third quarter Tate Barker was able to punch the ball in from 2 yards out. The Eagles didn’t get the extra point and the score at the end of the third quarter was 21-13.
 Weiser scored a touchdown in each quarter of Friday’s game. The fourth touchdown of the night was a keeper by Spencer, who found a hole and ran the ball 38 yards for the score with 9:16 left in the final period. Weiser’s defense held the Eagles scoreless in the fourth quarter and the game ended with the score 28-13 with the Wolverines in front and moving on in the state playoffs.
 Spencer completed three of nine passes for 115 yards, with his longest pass of the night a 38-yard strike. He threw one interception. He carried the ball 13 times for 105 yards.
 Burke was the leading rusher for the Wolverines, collecting 109 yards on six carries. Layten Tolman had 12 carries for 79 yards. Willy Shirts ran for 36 yards and Ande Jensen had five touches for 29 yards.
 Caleb Harris caught a pass for 86 yards, setting up a Weiser score and leading receivers. Tim Reed had one catch for 16 yards and a touchdown. Kooper von Brethorst caught one ball for 13 yards.
