Weiser runners improve times at Nyssa Invitational

Weiser High School’s cross country teams competed last Wednesday at the Nyssa Invitational and many posted better times than the previous week.
It was not the fastest 5K race of the year. No runner on the course broke the 17-minute mark, although Josh Leavitt of Melba came close. He won the varsity boys race with a time of 17:03.13 in a crowded field of 177 runners.
Weiser senior Nate Lattin set the pace for the Wolverines on the flat and dusty 5,000 meter course at Nyssa. He finished with a time of 20:17.42, which was a full minute faster than his time of 21:26.52 recorded last week at the Weiser Invitational.
Other Weiser boys finishing the race included Tyler Walker (20:19.76), Colton Foster (21:02.34),  Michael Despain (21:34.51), Colyer Chandler (23:04.39), Dylan Turrentine (23:16.52), Levi Huston (24:11.18), Koen Webb (24.20.30), Aaron Despain (26:38.55), Ben Hathhorn (27:42.93).
In team scores for the varsity boys, Burns took first place, followed by Caldwell and Parma. The Weiser boys finished in the 14th spot. There were a number of 3A Snake River Valley Conference teams, in addition to Weiser, that made the trip to Nyssa, including Parma, Homedale, Payette and Fruitland.
Senior Ellie Walker ran the best time for the Weiser varsity girls. She finished with a time of 24:34.13. Her time at Nyssa was more than a minute faster than the 26:02.25 finish at the Weiser Invitational. Nyssa had a flat course versus a hilly and challenging course at the Weiser Invitational.
Other finishers for the Weiser varsity girls and their times: Kiearra Hoobery (25:39.54), Libbie Rynearson (25:48.22), Emily Abramson (25:52.48), Stephanie Bodett (25:53.75), Ashlyn Walker (27:19.06), Ellie Eames (27:29.43), Elizabeth Horton (30:35.10), Rachel Galligar (31:01.75), Leah Ankarberg (31:15.48), Emily McLaughlin (32:54.13).
Emmett’s Gemma LaVergne finished first for the varsity girls with a time of 19:27.15. A total of 131 girls ran the 5,000-meter race.
In team scores for the varsity girls, Burns placed first, followed by Middleton in second place and Borah in third. The Weiser girls took 10th place, in front of other SRV Conference teams Parma and Homedale.
Weiser coach Scott Hale said he continues to see improvement in times posted by Weiser runners, many of whom shaved a minute or so off their times from last week’s race at the Weiser Invitational.
Next up for the Weiser cross country teams is the Bob Firman Invitational XC at Eagle Island State Park. The two-day race has become one of the biggest high school events in the Northwest with more than 4,000 runners competing last year representing nearly 200 schools.
The 5K course is a scenic loop around water features and includes rough trail and mixed flat and hills. The winner among the varsity girls last year posted a time of 18:39.30. The varsity boys were paced by Kooper Williams, of Sugar-Salem, who blazed the course in 15:45.20.
The Bob Firman Invitational will mark the halfway point of the season for Weiser’s cross country runners. Last year, some Wolverines finished with personal records at the event, an indication that athletes were progressing and getting faster.
There are still several weeks for Weiser cross country runners to continue to improve with the goal of hitting peak performance at district and state.
