Weiser girls score 4 goals but not enough against Grizzlies

Last Tuesday saw the Lady Wolverines playing in their first conference game of the season against Fruitland on the Grizzlies’ home field. The match resulted in a 7-4 loss for Weiser.
Coach Bernie Weldon said that going into the game the team knew that they would have their hands full with Fruitland’s returning senior Abby Smith.
“We quickly realized that one of their freshmen, Abbi Roubidoux, was also an extremely fast and talented player,” Weldon stated.
Right away, Smith showed why she was a threat, and scored at just two minutes into the game.
Weiser’s Andrea Bouvia quickly answered back with a goal, after being fed down the right side by Rhianna Soliz. This brought the score to a 1-1 tie at the 6 minute mark.
Smith was again able to breakaway and score for the Lady Grizzlies just four minutes later.
At the 21 minute mark, Bouvia again tied up the score to 2-2 with another assist from Soliz.
The Grizzlies turned the tide back to their favor with Roubidoux gaining two more points for Fruitland at the 25 and 27 minute marks.
Bouvia was able to get the last point in the first half off of a penalty kick from Soliz’s attack. The first half ended with a 4-3 score in Fruitland’s favor.
Weiser was able to even up the score again in the first minutes of the second half. Soliz fed the ball to Bouvia again, allowing her to make another goal.
Weiser defense wasn’t able to keep Fruitland back though. Roubidoux scored again for the Grizzlies, followed by a goal by Smith. Roubidoux finished out the game with another score, bringing the final tally to 7-4 for Fruitland.
While sad that the evening didn’t bring out a win for the Lady Wolverines, the coaching staff is looking at the game positively.
Weldon said, “We were able to get a good look at Fruitland, and we know what we need to work on defensively.”
The JV team was able to pull out a 5-3 win during their game.
Wolverine Samantha Despain was a force to be reckoned with. She scored off of a throw in by Mecarte Olsen after just 5 minutes of play.
Fruitland rallied and scored 3 goals during the first half.
Weiser came back strong after the half though. New player Gabi Palmer scored with an assist from Despain. Minutes later Despain scored a goal herself bringing the score to a 3-3 tie.
Despain scored once again off of a penalty kick, which put Weiser into the lead 4-3.
Melodee Cathey put the final score on the board, which led the Wolverines to a 5-3 win.
Weldon was pleased with how the girls played.
“Our JV team was behind at the half, but we didn’t panic. We were still positive and focused at half-time.”
Weldon continued, “That positive energy and focus led to a tremendous second half with great distribution of the ball offensively as well as stiff defensive pressure.”
