The Snake River Valley District Tournament started on Thursday, Feb. 2 with the Weiser Wolverines hosting the Payette Pirates.
The lady Wolverines continued with great teamwork, using a full court press and quickly scoring on the offensive side.
Once again, Weiser jumped out to a sizable lead before Payette was able to put anything in the hoop.
Mattie Shirts started things off with four quick points. First with a bucket from the block and then with a steal on the Pirate inbounds pass for a lay-in.
Kailee Lerew soon had an assist off a fast break, finding Tobie Noyer coming in from the back court for a 3 at the top.
Noyer soon added a rebound putback for 2 more.
Weiser continued to capitalize on Payette’s inbound passes. Lerew with a steal and a one dribble lay-in. Then Ellie Shirts with a steal and a short pass to Lerew for another bucket. Finally, Macy Maloney snagged a steal, promptly making a lay-in.
Next trip to offense, Kendall Rynearson with an assist to E. Shirts in the corner for a 3-pointer.
With a minute to play in the first, Weiser up 18-0.
Payette finally snuck past Weiser’s defense for their first points of the game.
Weiser’s Hannah Samson working hard on offense, went to the line making one of her free throws.
The first quarter ended Weiser 19, Payette 6.
The second quarter was highlighted by the Wolverines dominating as they added 28 points, holding Payette to 4.
The run started with a long pass from Noyer to Brady Reed for an 18-foot bucket for 2. Reed soon found Quinci Marvin open beyond the arc for 3.
Weiser continued to push points with a streak capped when Reed drained a 3.
With 2 minutes remaining in the half, E. Shirts found Marvin two large steps beyond the arc, she hit the mark for her second 3. Next trip to offense, Marvin reciprocated, finding E. Shirts in the same spot. Shirts drilled a similar deep 3.
Going into the locker room it was Weiser 46, Payette 10.
The second half proved less eventful as the Wolverines continued to increase their lead.
Midway through the third, Rynearson scored 4 quick points for Weiser. First off, a pass from E. Shirts for a 5-foot jump shot in transition and then soon afterwards making 2 free throws.
The fourth quarter went quick with a running clock.
Jasi Yraguen finished off Weiser’s scoring with a rebound put back, giving Weiser 61 points on the night.
Weiser advanced to the second round with a 61-18 win over Payette.
All 10 of Weiser’s players contributed points. Leading the Wolverine’s in their first round of the tournament were cousins, Mattie Shirts and Ellie Shirts – both scoring 12 points. Reed and Noyer each added 7 points. Marvin and Lerew had 6 each. Maloney and Rynearson each had 4 points. Yraguen with 2 and Samson with 1.
