The Weiser High School varsity football team walked away with a 44-6 victory in its final regular season game Friday at Roy Dickerson Field in Weiser.
The win was important in terms of seeding going into state play. Information was scant at the time of publication, the Idaho High School Activities Association not yet posting its online brackets for the 3A competition.
Weiser High School Athletic Director Tyler Grant, however, affirmed Weiser will face Buhl Friday at home. Game time is 7 p.m.
In a game where backup players were utilized in the fourth quarter, the Wolverines held the Panthers scoreless until late in the fourth quarter with only 33 seconds left to play.
Weiser scored 20 in the first quarter, followed by 14 in the second, and 10 in the third.
Weiser 44, Parma 6
Weiser kicked off to start the game, with Panther running back Colt Murdock gaining four yards from Parma’s own 26-yard line. That would be the only significant gain of the drive, Parma choosing not to punt on fourth down, which ended with quarterback Stetson Pinz tackled for a short gain.
The Wolverines took over on downs from Parma’s 32-yard line, quarterback Brett Spencer completing a swing pass to receiver Jack Burke for a 21-yard gain. Senior Willy Shirts then scored on an 11-yard touchdown run.
Ryndon Olsen’s kick was blocked, leaving the score 6-0 just over three minutes into the first quarter.
Parma was able to advance downfield on its next drive, facing a fourth down and six from Weiser’s 45-yard line, but pressure by defensive lineman Zander McElroy forced a bad pass on the screen, ending the Panthers’ drive.
A pass to Burke took the ball into Parma territory on the ensuing series. Spencer then connected with receiver Brayden Walker who managed to get separation from a Panther defender. Walker was tackled at the three-yard line for about a 37-yard gain. Shirts powered in for the touchdown and Olsen made good on the point after, giving Weiser the 13-0 lead with 2:13 left in the quarter.
Parma’s next series ended with another three-and-out, Shirts scoring again on the next drive and Olsen once again making good on the point after to give the Wolverines the 20-0 advantage with only 20 seconds left in the first.
Burke scored early in the second quarter and Spencer found the end zone on a keeper up the middle with only 1:44 remaining in the half, the Wolverines taking the 34-0 lead going into intermission.
Weiser received the kickoff to open the second half, the offense advancing to Parma’s one-yard line where senior lineman Jesse Locket took the handoff and ploughed forward for the touchdown.
Olsen’s point after made it 41-0 Weiser with 9:56 left in the fourth quarter.
The Wolverines found themselves in a fourth-down situation with only 2:16 remaining in the game, Olsen connecting on a roughly 31-yard field goal to end the game 44-6.
