Weiser blanks Grangeville 40-0 for Homecoming

What is a sure way to guarantee a storm with torrential wind, rain, lightning, and thunder?  Schedule Homecoming festivities and it will come.
Weiser hosted both JV and varsity this past Friday for Homecoming and a non-conference game.
Homecoming games are always fun, but sometimes they come with less focus than normal game preparations.
The Wolverines started off the game with a little less focus than normal, but scored first in the first quarter. Weiser took possession first in the game and marched downfield with Brett Spencer throwing a great 20-yard pass to Evan Haggerty.
Willy Shirts ran a couple of times to get into field goal range, but the Wolverines couldn’t convert, missing the field goal.
Grangeville took possession and ran into a brick wall on all three downs, forcing them to punt.  Weiser’s Brayden Walker brought the ball up to the 50-yard line on the punt return. Shirts ran up the middle for a couple of yards and then Spencer passed to Walker for a first down.
The brotherly connection took over with Spencer passing to Brock Spencer for a 20-yard gain and brought the Wolverines to the 15-yard line.
A couple of passes fell incomplete and with Spencer scrambling, shuttle passed to Shirts who recorded a first-and-goal for Weiser. Shirts tried to run it in unsuccessfully, setting up the quarterback sneak for a touchdown. Shirts’ extra point try was good and Weiser was on the board 7-0.
Grangeville once again had the ball and couldn’t convert on a pass, running into Walker and Shirts on a run to the right and then tried to go up the middle and ran into all of the Wolverines on the line.
The Bulldogs were forced to punt again and Walker brought it to the 35-yard line for the Wolverines. The last drive of the first quarter was a doozy with Weiser being penalized and in the position of having to go 15 yards during the second down.
Weiser couldn’t convert on the long bomb, but Grangeville got caught roughing the passer and gave Weiser a first down. Spencer had a great quarterback keeper to the 20-yard line for the Wolverines, but another penalty took them back to the 45-yard line.
Shirts got the ball two times in a row for a total of 12 yards and a first down, and then Spencer kept the ball and ran for a few more. Spencer again had to scramble at the quarterback position and was able to complete the pass to Haggerty for a first down.
The whistle sounded for the second quarter as lightning hit and halted the game. Weiser would get back on the field around 8:30 p.m.
When the Wolverines got back onto the field and started the second quarter, Jack Burke took the ball from Spencer in a sweep to the left of the field and scored.
Surefooted Shirts made the extra point bringing the score to 14-0.
Weiser kicked off and Grangeville ran into Levi Estes, stopping them at the 35-yard line. The quarterback scrambled on the next play with Shirts pressuring him and ran into Zander McElroy, Walker, and Rylee Willet.
The next play didn’t make it past the scrimmage line and then on the third down, Maddox Stevens came around the right side and made a great sack. Grangeville was forced to punt and in a controversial call Weiser was called for roughing the kicker and gave Grangeville the first down.
It didn’t matter, though, because of Weiser’s solid defense. Grangeville was unable to score ultimately turning the ball over on downs. Weiser went back to Burke on the first drive, to the left, for about 10 yards.  Weiser lost a little momentum with an incomplete pass and a near sack fumble recovery. Then, on fourth down, Weiser went for it and the ball was intercepted.  Grangeville looked to have some momentum with a completed pass and a couple of runs up the middle, but a penalty took them backwards and then the quarterback met Willet again forcing the punt.
Weiser took over at the 30-yard line. Brock Spencer got the quick pass to the right and almost had enough for the first down. On the 40-yard line Spencer once again found Spencer up the middle on a 10-yard pass and Brock ran for the touchdown.
Shirts had an uncharacteristic miss on the extra point leaving the score 20-0 Weiser. Carlos Arana kicked off to Bulldogs who ran the ball almost to the 30-yard line, but was stopped by Marco Garcia.
Grangeville was trying to change the momentum but Stevens sacked the quarterback hard again and on the next play Brett Spencer would step up through the passing lane, make the interception, and run it in for the touchdown.
Ryndon Olsen would get a try at the extra point, but he couldn’t get it in the uprights either. The score now 26-0, Shirts kicked off to Grangeville who again only got one first down with Weiser’s defense led by Willet and company tackling at every opportunity.
Weiser took over again after the punt. The Wolverines didn’t have great field position and the play resulted in an incomplete pass. The next play was a great run up the middle by Shirts for almost 15 yards. Next was a great 20-yard pass to Burke who managed to gather a few more yards on top of that. Two runs up the middle by Kaleb Grove would give the Wolverines another first down at the 30-yard line.
A completed pass to both Haggerty and Spencer would get Weiser almost to the goal line. Another short pass to Michael Youngberg and Burke again would bring Weiser within a yard of scoring.
Shirts was given the ball and pushed it into the end zone. He iced the cake with the extra point, giving the Wolverines a 33-0 lead.  Grangeville once again met a host of Wolverines on defense and was unable to convert on the next possession.
An awesome 30-yard pass from Spencer to Haggerty took the ball to the 30-yard line for the Wolverines and set them up to score again. Shirts ran for a few yards, setting up a 35-yard touchdown pass from Spencer to Payton Albertson. Shirts did well on the extra point to bring the score to the final 40-0.
The Wolverine defense forced a fumble and was able to substitute players to close out the game.  Weiser will finish up the non-conference schedule this next Friday in Baker City, Ore.
 Go Wolverines!
