Weiser blanks Cole Valley Christian 49-0

The Wolverines recorded a solid performance Friday, handing 2A Cole Valley Christian High School a 49-0 loss on the Chargers’ home field at Owyhee High School in Meridian.
It was the team’s second shutout of 2022, the first coming in a 24-0 road win against Buhl in the Wolverines’ season opener on Aug. 26.
Weiser wasted no time on Friday, scoring on its first two possessions, one following a fumble recovery by the Wolverine defense.
The first score of the night came on a 3-yard run by Michael Youngberg about two and a half minutes into the first quarter. Youngberg would score again on the next offensive drive, powering in from the Charger’s 5-yard line.
Both point-after attempts by junior kicker Ryndon Olsen were good, making it 14-0 with 5:12 left to go in the first.
Just two seconds into the second quarter, it was junior Kaleb Grove finding the endzone from one yard out.
Cole Valley began its next drive on its own 35-yard line, but a bad exchange between Chargers’ quarterback Dalton Kranz and his center on first down resulted in a fumble recovery by Weiser junior defensive lineman Braden Phillips.
The Wolverine offense took over on the Chargers’ 34-yard line, but Weiser quarterback Andrew Enders was sacked for a 9-yard loss on the first play of the drive, resulting in a second and 19 from the 43-yard line.
Weiser then went to the air, Enders connecting with senior tight end Thomas Johnson for a 35-yard play and a first down at the Chargers’ 8-yard line. A couple plays later, senior running back Maddox Stevens powered up the middle for a 3-yard touchdown.
Olsen’s point-after attempts following Grove’s and Stevens’ touchdowns were good, leaving the score 28-0 with 9:12 left to play in the second quarter.
Enders would score next on a quarterback keeper up the middle of the line for a 15-yard touchdown with 45 seconds remaining in the half.
Weiser received the ball to start the second half, junior running back and kick returner Brock Spencer taking Kranz’ kick at the 12-yard line and running down the right side of the field for an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, giving Weiser a 42-0 lead early in the third quarter.
Sophomore Kash Cobb added Weiser’s final touchdown of the game with a 2-yard touchdown run late in the third.
Cole Valley, who was clearly outmatched by Weiser, struggled with false starts on the offensive line and had a total of four turnovers in the game.
Olsen missed one field goal attempt in the game but made good on all seven extra points. Weiser gained a total of 317 yards on 40 plays in the game, with Cole Valley generating 132 yards of total offense on 35 plays.
Enders went 7 of 8 and 176 yards passing and one rushing touchdown.
Stevens led the Wolverines in rushing with 43 yards on 7 attempts, followed by senior Michael Youngberg with 5 carries for 29 yards.
Spencer led the team in receiving with 2 receptions for 56 yards, and Youngberg recorded 2 receptions for 39 yards.
The defense was stout Friday night, with Grove recording a total of 4.5 tackles and 3 solos, followed by senior Malakye Scott with 4 tackles and three solos.
“We executed real nice. It was a beautiful night for football and had a nice crowd of Weiser people coming in support of their team and so we have another nice memory,” said head coach Tom Harrison following the game. “We are getting closer to our destination. We are doing some good things and the kids are feeling good about themselves. The coaches are feeling good about what they are doing and it’s a great feeling right now.”
Weiser will face off against Payette on Friday at home against conference rival Payette, which is 3-1 overall on the season, including a 23-7 win against Caldwell, a 24-21 win against Cole Valley, and a 30-6 win against Marsing. Payette fell to New Plymouth in a narrow 41-38 loss on Aug. 26.
“It will be homecoming, so it should be exciting,” Harrison said about this week’s matchup against Payette. “This is going to be our first conference game, so we need to win that one.”
